Thanks Helen.  It looks like you have some problem with your camera causing the photos to be blurred.

Sadly, the problem was that my digital camera broke after the first week I was there, and no one could fix it in Russia! So I had to buy a cheapo regular camera and then digitize the photos when I got back. You can't compare these to digital photos of course, and I was so mad about this! But it was better than no photos.

Oh Scott, these are truly marvelous photos!  I simply adore the inside looking out shot in the tower.....the drainage ditch or the great stones of the steps, one would be my favorite.  I adore the ceiling photo with just enough of the "glories" left to be able to imagine how it looked a hundred years ago.

Years ago one of my favorite things was going thru old fabulous buildings (closed up of course) to photograph what you have done here.  I fell thru a couple of floors into the basements....hope you haven't!

I really appreciate your photographs and sharing them with us.

..Arleen

Pardon my ignorance but can anyone tell me when the Arsenal was built, for whom, and the history of the building (s).  I seem to remember the Emperor N I was connected to it, but have forgot.  Thank you.

Sorry it took a while to answer this-, however, the Arsenal was built in the early 19th century to replace another pleasure pavillion- [Monbijou, perhaps ?]. In any case it was used to house Nicholas Ist military collections. [and subsquent Emperors added their own  apparently].

Robert - what a fantastic aerial photograph.   Was that taken the day the hot balloons were at Tsarskoe Selo?

The Arsenal was designed by Adam Menelaws.  It stands at the very heart of the Alexander Park, earlier site of Mon Bijou.

Much of Nicholas I's superb armoury (much of it Persian of origin) is now in the Catherine Palace.   There have been discussions, for a few years, of restoring the Arsenal and combining the armour and weapons currently in the Hermitage Museum with those from the Catherine Palace.

Ничего примечательного, но это подвал павильона Арсенал. Довольно сухой хотя были проливные дожди.
Anything remarkable, but it is a cellar of pavilion the Arsenal. Enough though torrential rains were dry.
