I do not like your accusing tone at all. I am writing a book on the sisters and do not like to let out too much before that. I did my research before that Erika lady published her book. Mathile's letters does contain her address and places she and Maria Sofia met. I asked for permission and got copies of the letters. German Author Matha Schad helped me with translating the letters. YOU DO HEARD ABOUT HER RIGHT???

I shall not answer any more quies if they are done is such a way. Curtesey and consideration seemed a dying thing these days.

All the Wittelsbach sisters were real beauties however, I find them looking always very cold!!

The sisters obviously copied Sisi´s hair styles, accentuating the resemblances among them.

Marie was a very proud woman, who never accepted the loss of her throne!

I read somewhere that Marie Valerie (Sisi´s daughter) wanted her father to marry Mathilde, she thought that her quiet aunt might be a company for the emperor.

Yes Francis Joseph was not interested in marrying again I guess he was happy with Katherina Schratt.

Agneschen, could you please tell me the author and the title of this book you mentioned?

Some time ago there was a documentary about Queen Marie on Bavarian televison. The pictures of Francesco and even of little Princess Maria Christina on their deathbed were shown there. Has anybody seen a pic of Maria Christina alive?

The book is called Da Gaeta ad Arco - Diario di Francesco II di Borbone edited by Aniello Gentile (King Francesco's diaries). I found it less interesting than I expected for it does not tell much about the Neapolitan royal family. This is mostly due to King Francesco's laconic entries in his diary, like "Today I got up late. Heard mass. Went to have a walk with so and so. Dined with so and so. Marie went riding with Spatz" and so on during 300 pages. He seems to have been truly devoted to his wife for he never fails to mention her and her activities though he hardly ever shared them.

It was published in 1988 and may be out of print. I found my copy on www.bookfinder.com (in the italian section).

I found this interesting photograph of Francesco II and Archduke Albrecht. It was taken in Arco.

Both of them died in Arco - Francesco in 1894 and Albrecht in 1895. On this Italian website it was said (I guess ...) that Albrecht lived in "Villa Hedwig". Francesco lived at the Castle of Arco.

Does anyone have more information on Albrecht's Villa or the castle? Are there any pics of it? And did Francesco and Marie stay there very often?

... and another question to everyone who possesses the book "Francesco II di Borbone, Da Gaeta ad Arco, diario di Francesco II di Borbone":

I read on another Italian website that Francesco started to write in his diary on January 1st 1862 and finished it three days before his death in 1894.
I'd like to know what he wrote about the death of his daughter Maria Christina in 1870. In Germany we don't know much about her short life. In some books it is said that she got ill (but what disease?) and her nanny was incompetent.

King Francesco about his daughter's illness and death (from Da Gaeta ad Arco) :

Jan. 22 1870 - Work, study. With Maria to Pincio. Little one [Cristina] much worse in the evening. We are afraid.

Jan. 23 - Massoni & Valery
[doctors I guess] saw the little one. She is no better. Death seems to be drawing near.

Jan. 24 - Bad day. Received tokens of friendship from everyone. Neither better nor worse during the afternoon.

Jan. 25 - Quiet night and day. Much worse in the evening. The Trani's nanny came to help.

Jan. 26 - At 3 a.m. Mr Pascolo confirmed the little one. We were afraid of loosing her at some point. She grew calmer during the day.

Jan. 27 - Quiet night. At 7 a.m. a feverish attack made us fear the worst.

Jan. 28 - At 4 Cristina was seized with convulsions and flew to heaven at 7.30. Are heartbroken.

Jan. 29 - Grief is our lot. We often go and see the little one who looks like an angel amongst flowers.

Jan. 30 - Spent the day with Maria next to my daughter's corpse. It will be brought to church at 8 p.m.

April 1 - Maria and I visited Cristina's grave !!

Thank you very much, Agneschen.

I think it's also very interesting that Francesco called his wife Maria and not Marie. Her Bavarian and Austrian relatives called her Marie.

I read several times about the nanny of Mathilde Trani's daughter Mädi. Her name was Therese and she was also Marie Wallersee's nanny. Everybody was very pleased with her.

Do you have a French or English translation of this book or are you able to understand the Italian original?

Me, too. But my Italian is very bad, so there won't be any sense in buying some of them.

Do you know these two German books about Marie?

Clara Tschudi "Königin Maria Sophia"
Marie Larisch "Die Heldin von Gaeta"

... and there is a lot of information in Brigitte Sokop's wonderful book "Jene Gräfin Larisch".

I have just been to have a look at the books they sell on Maria Sofia. La Regina del Sud by Arrigo Petacco I have already and do NOT recommend it at all as it is rather fanciful and full of inaccuracies (the author maintains that Marie was nicknamed Spatz, that Sisi and Franz Josef met and became engaged in Possi, that Marie Larisch was actually Marie's daughter and that her real name was Viola ... etc). The other book by Pier Giusto Jaeger Francesco II di Borbone I also have : it is interesting but deals mostly with Gaeta and not that much with Marie. The bio by Amedeo Tosti I have not read.

I ordered a copy of Jene Gräfin Larisch a couple of weeks ago on amazon and am eagerly awaiting it but they sell a new edition and the book will not be released before april ... 3 months to wait !

Is Die Heldin von Gaeta worth reading ? I have one of Marie Larisch's book on Empress Elisabeth and did not find it very accurate to say the least. Clara Tschudi's bio of Maria Sofia I am dying to find - either in German or in Italian ...

I have a copy of Clara Tschudi"s book "Maria Sophia , Queen of Naples". I think it was the English edition to the other book. It was published in 1905. She also wrote books on her sister Sisi and Augusta of Prussia. Both of them I also have. Rare finds.

I did not know that the book had been translated into english but I guess it must be as difficult to find. The only copy I have been able to locate is apparently in norwegian (a language I neither speak nor read) ! Tschudi's bios of Elisabeth and Augusta are much easier to find.

A silly question most probably but does anyone know what colour were Marie's eyes ? According to several sources they were dark but the late Queen Maria José of Italy said that they were piercing blue. Marie's aunt, Archduchess Sophie, wrote that they were almond-shaped and had a melancholy look which made the young girl look even more beautiful. Any thought ?
