Photos of Nicky in profile?
« on: September 25, 2005, 12:52:42 PM »
I found this in Marvin Lyon's book, Nicholas II. It's believed to be the only known photo of Nicky in profile. He hated his profile (to his mind it was too similar to the murdered Emperor Paul's), but this was taken as a study for the Imperial Mint to use on coins and medals. The only other profile photos I've even heard of are the ones Pankratov insisted be taken for the family's ID papers in Tobolsk. I know I've never seen another profile -- anybody else?

I have the 5 rouble coin that has the profile on it.

Knowing how poor the general public was I tried to find out how much 5 roubles would buy in 1897.  I think I could have stayed at a 5 star hotel on my 5 rouble coin and had some left over.

I think I heard that every Emperor turned the opposite way to the one before on the coins, but Nicholas didn't like his left facing profile, so turned right as had his father.

Anyone know for sure?

That sounds vaguely familiar, Alixz, but I haven't the slightest idea where I've heard it.

Useless factoid of the day: before they redesigned the 2005 nickel, Lincoln was the only president facing toward the right on an American coin.

I seem to recall reading that Nicholas II did not like his profile because it reminded him, and others, of Emperor Paul I, who was not exactly a stellar ruler, so he avoided profile shots when he could.

Oh I love this profile...a plaque or medal I assume?  It is either from a Spanish or a French source ecause of the spelling of his name...I would love to find one for my collection.

I did find some rather nice bronze and plaster busts of N2 while in Russia last week.

I think it's French, because on the right it says 'Mouchon' (probably the name of the person who made it), and that seems like a French name to me.

Did you make pictures of those busts in Russia?

IMO, I believe it's not a photo. : ) Btw, are we talking about formal or informal photos of Nicholas in profile? I think there are quite a few informal ones - but not as much formal ones. :-|

There are more photos of Tsar's profile. One was posted n one of Rare photos threads, and in 1913 too.

Same one, IMO.

That was new one for me. Where did you find it? I wonder about place and date too, relating the photo. Any idea?

I wonder if that first photo was used to make this medal

"Give my love to all who remember me."

There is another I have found, but I can't seem to find it. He is facing the right, and wearing a simple jacket. Anyone have it?
