Archduke Ferdinand, Karl-Ludwig's son
« on: September 26, 2005, 06:19:20 AM »
I would like to know more about Archduke Ferdinand, third son of Archduke Karl Ludwig and his second wife Archduchess Maria Annunziata. I know that he married morganaticaly and that he used the surname Burg, and that he didn't have any children.
But, how did he get along with his father, his brother Franz Ferdinand? Did they maintained contact after his marriage to Bertha Czuber?

Thanks

Daniela

As Ferdinand went to his brother Franz Ferdinand and told him that he wanted to marry a commoner and if he could help him as F.F. also had married benief him, F.F. pointed out that his wife was a countess and her family belonged ancient nobility and Ferdinand´s financée was only a normal citizen. So the relationship betwwen the brothers wasn´t the best one :-/.

Although Archduke Karl Ludwig wasn't the best husband ever, he loved his three sons Franz Ferdinand (1863-1914), Otto (1865-1906) and Ferdinand Karl (1868-1914) and his three daughters Margarethe Sophie (1870-1902), Annunziata (1876-1961) and Elisabeth (1878-1960) a lot. He continued to write his diary when his first son was born in 1863 and made notes about everything his children did.

Ferdinand spent his childhood in Reichenau and Artstetten. His mother Maria Annunziata died, when he was only two years old.

The Archduke loved the theatre, he even wanted to become director of the Hoftheater, Vienna. The Emperor was against it, of course.

At the turn of the century he got to know Berta. In 1903 he asked Emperor Franz Joseph, his uncle, for permission to marry the young woman. But the Emperor was shocked and didn't give him the permisson.
When Ferdinand Karl married Berta Czuber, who was the daughter of a professor, in Chur on 15 Aug 1909, his father has been dead for over ten years. In 1911, three years after the marriage, Emperor Franz Joseph was informed about it and told his nephew to leave the House of Habsburg. He even wasn't allowed to bear the titel "Archduke" anymore. So he called himself Burg since 1911. By the way, Burg was the pseudonym of his father Karl Ludwig. Berta and Ferdinand lived in Schloss Rosenstein and Rottenstein near Meran.

Ferdinand wasn't allowed to set foot on Austria and Hungary after 1911. When his brother Franz Ferdinand was murdered in 1914, the old Emperor made an exception and Ferdinand was able to take part at the funeral.

The only member of the Imperial family who stayed in touch with Ferdinand after 1911 was - once more - his stepmother Archduchess Marie Therese and her daughters. Ferdinand's sister Margarethe Sophie, Duchess of Württemberg, has been quarreling with her brothers because of an inheritance for years and died in 1902.

Ferdinand Karl died in Munich on March 10th 1915. His wife Berta died 5 months before her 100th birthday in 1979. The couple is buried in Meran.

Well, I'm so surprised that Karl Ludwig was so caring father, since I read somewhere that he wasn't very pleasant towards his wives.
But, what do you think, if Karl Ludwig would be alive, would he be in contact with Ferdinand, since Emperor »exiled« him?
Archduchess Marie Therese, well, she was an extraordinary person, she was protective towards Franz Ferdinand to, wasn't she?

Linnea, MarieCharlotte, thank you so very much.

But, do you perhaps have some other photos of Ferdinand and Bertha?

I think that Archduke Karl Ludwig was his first wife Margarethe Caroline of Saxony and his second wife Maria Annunziata of Neaples a good husband.
As I am very interested in the biography of Maria Annunziata, I know that the couple often changed their residence, because Annunziata didn't want to stay in a city for long time. First they went to Görz, then to Graz, after that to Artstetten and finally to Vienna. (They had a lovely Palais in the Favoritenstr.) Karl Ludwig followed his wife without any complainments, although he wanted to stay in Graz.
Besides, I have some letters of Karl Ludwig that give the picture of an harmonious life in Artstetten and he also wrote how much he loves his wife.

During his third marriage to beautiful Marie Therese, Karl Ludwig's behaviour changed a lot. He became extremely jelous and even brutal. I read that he whiped his wife. He was unfriendly to her most of the time. Nevertheless, Karl Ludwig died in the armes of Marie Therese.

BTW, I don't think that Ferdinand and his father would have been in contact after the marriage to Berta. That had been to shocking for the brother of an Emperor.

Marie Therese and her daughters were the only members of the Imperial family who took part in the wedding of Franz Ferdinand and Sophie. They've always been in contact. After 1914, Marie Therese took also care of her "grandchildren" Sophie, Max and Ernst.
Marie Therese was the one who visited Archduke Otto when he was very ill shortly before his death. Marie Therese didn't care that Otto's two mistresses also looked after him. It seems they got along quite well.

Oh, that´s terrible, Marie! Crown Prince Rudolf (only three years younger) was also a great admirer of Marie Therese (and her beauty) and he said that she was the perfection of a woman and he openly pitied her for having such an old husband etc.

Rudolf also admired the beauty of his aunt Marie José, Marie Therese's sister, who married Carl Theodor in Bavaria. Marie Valérie wrote about that in her diary.
Quite funny... Marie José was only 3 years older than her nephew.

According to "GeneWeb" Maria Jose was born on March 19, 1857 and Rudolf was born on August 21, 1858. So, Linnea you are right.

And, MarieCharlotte the photos you have posted, are beautiful!!! :) :) :)
