Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria and Empress Maria Anna
« on: February 20, 2010, 05:01:40 PM »
Hi. I'm trying to find photos (not portraits) of Emperor Ferdinand I (1793-1875) and Empress Maria Anna (1803-1884), so I would be very happy if you had some to share. Thanks in advance and I do hope they exist!

This is the only photo of Ferdinand I have ever seen:

I have a photo of Maria Anna, too. But it's on the other computer, so you have to wait until tomorrow.

Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.

Thank you very much MarieCharlotte. :) I was beginning to wonder whether they existed or not. Ferdinand does resemble his portraits. Do you know when this was taken and where?  And if he and Maria Anna ever visited Vienna after the abdication?

Maria Anna

I found both pictures in "Das Familienalbum von Kaiser Franz Joseph und Elisabeth" by Gabriele Praschl-Bichler. The captions aren't very informative, but I will have a look into the book later. Maybe I can also find some information about Ferdinand's life after his abdication. As far as I know he loved his new residence, the Hradschin in Prague, but he also visited his family in Vienna regularly. In a book about Franz Joseph's childhood I read some letters by Archduchess Sophie and she sometimes mentioned Uncle Ferdinand and Aunt Marianne. I know, that's very vague, but I will look into my books.

Thank you very much. It's hard to find info about their lives after the abdication. It's nice that he went to Vienna and spendt time with his family. I wonder if all five Emperors and Empresses (including Empress Karoline Augusta) got together in the same place. And imagine a group picture! But thanks for any additional info.

On this day (02/12/1848 at 8 o'clock in the morning) Emperor Ferdinand abdicated in favour of his 18 year old nephew, Franz. During the 1848 revolution the imperial family was forced to flee from Vienna and took refuge in Olmütz (Olomouc). It was this provincial Moravian town that witnessed the handover of power. Due to the unrest in the empire, it was considered that the abdication of the feeble Emperor Ferdinand would save the dynasty. Ferdinand's brother, Archduke Franz Karl, who was next in line, waived his right to the throne after forceful persuasion by his wife Archduchess Sophie, who saw that the moment had come to realise her lifelong dream of her firstborn son becoming emperor. At first it had been planned to let the eighteen-year-old emperor ascend the throne as Franz II, in memory of his grandfather, Franz I. However, the addition of his second name was intended to recall the ‘People’s Emperor’ Joseph II, resulting in the double name of Franz Joseph I, an unusual choice for the House of Habsburg. After Ferdinand declared his nephew Emperor, he is supposed to have whispered to him: "God bless you, remain steadfast, God will protect you".

So we are exactly 165 year from the accession of Franz Josef, europe's longest-reigning adult monarch.
