Craig McLauglan was truly awful in the Zeta-Jones version.

I rather liked the Zeta-Jones version overall.

Oh yeah, and Omar Sharif was in it that too. :-[

Well Omar did a lot of rubbish because he lost countless fortunes on his obsession with gambling at cards.

Yes! as did I. Much to my dismay, the original version cannot be obtained. I believe a heavily edited copy is now out there. If I remember corrently the movie was 4 hours long..or was it longer?

I also have the edited copy.  Didn't realize there was an unedted version.  According to imb (If one can take imb seriously, I've seen where a couple of mistakes made here and there) it's running time is three hours.

I do not know if there is an unedited version or not. I remember watching it in high school, and it was quite long. I seem to recall it lasting most of the day and into the night. It was very breathtaking from what I remember, the set and the gowns. Tis sad we get only a watered down version.

I just received a DVD of "Young Catherine" by mail as a gift. Apparently it was available on E-bay for $13! I didn't get the chance to watch it yet, but based on everyone's comments, I'm really looking forward to it. I wonder why this movie is so hard to get?

I watched the movie last night and enjoyed it very much. It wasn't even as historically inaccurate as I expected, at least compared to some other films on the subject. Julia Ormond of course looked nothing like the real Catherine, but she pulled it off, IMO.

Yes it is a beautiful film. Most of it is filmed in Russia which is fascinating. Christopher Plummer was excellent as was Franco Nero, Vanessa Redgrave, the late Mark Frankel and of course Julia Ormond.

Yes, that's right, it was filmed on location, which added a lot to the film!

Still trying to get a DVD of this excellent film! Wish I knew how to get the unedited version though.
