Yes, Alixz, Crazy Horse was a remarkable man, still very much revered by contemporary Sioux. This book suggests that internal Sioux rivalry led as much to his killing as did US army animus.

Re GD Alexis, my book only mentioned him in passing. People might want to check out his bio on Wikipedia. It's an imperfect source, of course, but tells a lot about his US visit. On his hunting expedition , he met four major figures of historical significance. These were  chief Spotted Tail, who four years later fought against Custer at the Little Big Horn; General Phil Sheridan; Colonel Custer himself; and Buffalo Bill Cody . A quadrifecta! They were almost never in the same place and Alexis seems to have met them all.

Though the West was quite wild then, GD Alexis didn't exactly rough it. True to his sybaritic instincts, he traveled in great comfort. More like luxury. With a large entourage, and his hosts falling all over themselves to show him a good time, which of course  for Alexis meant the pursuit of women, as well as of wine and song (literally!). What's the New World for, if not to indulge Grand Ducal pleasures?

Another obscure reference:

I did not see the full episode, sadly have yet to see a single one, but when I watched the SAG Awards in January (seeing as no one posted it yet here I thought it would be cute to be the one) when they showed a clip from "Hot In Cleveland" to announce Betty White's nomination for Best Actress In A Comedy Series, they showed a hilarious clip.

"Anastasia, last surviving daughter of the Romanov family" (or something like that)
Person she said that to: "Really?!"
Betty: "No, I've just always wanted to say that!"

She won the award btw.

Another odd place to find Romanovs, I guess, would be in a Rolling Stones song; but then again maybe not. For those of us of a certain age (not young), and old enough to know better , there is the Stones' 1968 classic, "Sympathy For the Devil".  Midway through, the Devil sings ,

"I hung around  St. Petersburg, when I saw it was a time for a change

killed the Tsar and his ministers, Anastasia screamed in vain "

Wince. At that time I knew the basics of the revolution and Anastasia, though not much else. Interesting that the song's writers, two young products of the British school system at that time, apparently expected their young, even teenage , fans to understand  the reference.
I'm not so sure they all did, but then again the song was golden musically, so that might not have been a problem.  I myself hear (feel) those lines  differently now. " Sympathy For The  Devil" is of course You Tube available.

I love that song, though being only 29 this year, I did not hear it until 1994-95 when I saw Interview With The Vampire for the first time. It may even have been later... At any rate, the song is re-done by Guns & Roses and I love the harder-edge composition of it. But yeah because I heard the song after I knew about the Romanovs, the reference was not lost on me. I do enjoy the original version of course. Just a great song!

This is not about the Romanov's, but I thought I would mention it.

I'm a big Star Trek fan, and love the episode The Trouble With Tribbles, written by David Gerrold.  This episode was produced in 1967.  There is a scene set in a space station bar involving Scotty and Chekov (before a big bar fight with the Klingons). en Chekov mentions that "little old lady from Leningrad", I have to smile. There hasn't been such a city in twenty years. After the Soviet Union fell, the city reverted to its original name, St. Petersburg.  Trek is set in the 23rd Century

Of course, Mr. Gerrold had no way of knowing that in 1967, the Soviet Union would collapse a mere 24 years later.

Also un-related to the Romanovs directly, but for those fans of ROYAL PAINS out there, there is a case, I think it is a recurring character? of a teenaged boy (17 I think) with hemophilia. Sadly I have not seen the entire episode(s) with him so I don't know if they mention Aleksei but that would be interesting. I'm sure someone else can explain further... I know that his father got addicted to antidepressants? I think? and that was taking a toll on their relationship... Anyway what I did see was good.

I've never seen Titanic - get your gasps out now *shockers!* *impossible!* *Oh my goodness!* Sorry, just teasing =D - but when he's talking about Anastasia, does he mean, like, Anastasia Romanov or some other Russian Anastasia? After all, it was set in 1912, ahe would have been 11 - oh, I see my point going down now-I mean, 11? - but you know, it would have been so COOL if he was talking about Anastasia Romanov!

It was about our favorite "imp"... actually in a way it was more a remark about Anna Anderson imo what with her not being Anastasia and all!

It went something along the lines of them talking about "Rose", one of the two didn't believe she was who she said she was (even though she was) so he makes the remark when his boss mentions "101 next month" he replies "So she's a very old god damn (sorry for language) liar... like that Russian babe Anesthesia" he meant Anastasia but he of course said the word referring to that stuff that knocks you out! I know I had just started watching it the day before yesterday... Titanic's one of those take or leave and have to be in the mood for it movies with me though! They were just about to take another dive to Titanic if i remember correctly when he got her call! Bodine that's his name (the guy with the beard who says it).

Actually my sister never has seen the movie.  She refused to go because she said she already knew how it would end.  No surprises.

Of course we all knew how it would end, but I went to see the special effects.  The love story meant nothing to me, just a vehicle to keep the story moving and make money from the related product line of jewelry and place settings and menus and posters.

But I don't remember that line.  Hmmm.

It's at the beginning... after they go down, they get Cal's safe trying to find "Rose's" necklace and they find her drawing that "Jack" drew. Brock (the boss guy) is on the news and Rose sees it, calls him just as there about to go back under saying she wants to see her drawing... and of course as she's on her way to meet him his coworker there Bodine totally calls her bluff that she's not who she says she is... of course only to find out that he was wrong! Bodine's name is mentioned when he does that 'lovely forensic (...) Mr. Bodine" i forget the word before she says his name but i think she said analysis! I'm sure Alixz if you have the movie you can go check it out!

this has probably been mentioned, but in murder on the orient express when it shows the elderly princess and on her bedside table there are several photgraphs, one of nicholas and one of nicholas and alexandra , couldn't see the other two but still :)
