Tudor Signatures
« on: October 13, 2005, 04:32:42 PM »
Hi all! In this thread we can post piccies of the signatures of people from Tudor times, like the Tudor Letter thread.

I think this will be interesting to see just how certain nobles actually signed their name (usually just the title) and show us that not everyone had as nice a signature as Elizabeth I!

I'll start us off with the signature of Lord Ambrose Dudley:
"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?"
-Sherlock Holmes

"Men forget, but never forgive; women forgive, but never forget."

Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, Lord Protector:

-Sherlock Holmes

Mary I. Notice how, as Umigon mentioned on another thread, she signs like a queen consort - Marye the Quene, rather than 'Mary R'.

Alas her handwriting not as neat as that of her sister!

One more form me - Henry VIII.

Almost unreadable. But then, he always hated writing.

From what I understand, this type of handwriting was not unique to Henry and it wasn't really because he hated to write. It was common in the 15th and at the turn of the 16th centuries - it is the midieval handwriting. I have seen some midieval manuscripts and the handwriting was very similar to this.

This is the signature of Queen Elizabeth Woodville. She signed 'Elyzabeth'.

This one is Marguerite d'Anjou:

Two signatures of Margaret Beaufort. The first is signed 'M Rychemond' - the second is audaciously 'Margaret R'!
