Philippe was profoundly deaf, extremely intelligent and cultured. He didn't marry until he was 30. It was thought that Marie was picked for him but regardless the 2 were well-suited and happy together. They were a well-liked couple and their family life the opposite of Leopold II's.

Was he deaf from his birth or was his deafness result of some disease in his childhood?
And what I don't understand is, how come that Philippe and his brother the King were of so different nature. I mean didn't they had equal upbringig?

Phillipe inherited much from her mother's side, the Orleans. His looks, character and also the deafness. In the Orleans family many were deaf, like  Princess Clementine, Francois of Joinville, a son of Duc de Chartres, Pierre de Penthièvre, Gaston d' Eu.......

Thanks, Paola!

You've said Gaston d' Eu, the one who married Isabella of Brasil?

Yes, Gaston d' Eu, the one who married Isabella of Brasil. Prince of Joinville descibed his nephew as strong, tall, very well educated but somewhat deaf.

And what about prince Philippe's children and their offspring - did perhaps some of them had problems with hearing?

Does anyone know Prince Philippe's exact height?  In his photographs he looks very, very tall.
