Philippe of Flanders and his family
« on: October 15, 2005, 07:49:41 AM »
Hi!
I would love to know more about Prince Baudouin of Belguim, son of Prince Philipp of Belguim and Princess Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was supposed to have become King of Belguim on day, but sadly he died aged 21, so his younger brother Albert became King. Please post all you know about him and of course pictures are very welcome!

It seems Princess Clementine, youngest daughter of Leopold II was in love with Baudouin,or Leopold II wanted Clementine to marry her cousin.

He (Baudouin) was said to have been very handsome. Maybe Leopold wanted to keep up his line through a marriage between them? But Clémentine fell in love with Louis Napoleon as a young woman, didn´t she?

Clémentine was in love with Baudouin. This love was not mutual. Baudouin didn't love her that much. After his death Clémentine was devastated.

Dear discussion group,

I'd love to learn more about Philippe, Count of Flanders (1837-1905) and his family. He was married to Maria of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1845-1912) and had the following children: Baudouin (1869-1891), Henriette (1870-1948.), Joséphine Marie (1870-1871), Joséphine (1872-1958.) and Albert I. (1875-1934).

Some questions to start with:
1) What was the cause of Baudouin early death?
2) I read that Joséphine became a nun and was one of the few people who followed the tomb of Louise, former Crownprincess of Saxony. Is this true?
3) Any information about Joséphine (1870-1871)?
4) Why did Philippe and Maria call two of their daughters "Joséphine"? Because of Maria's mother?

And - of course - I would love to see pics of the family. There are quite many pics of Maria, Henriette and Albert, but I guess that I've never seen a photo of Baudouin and the two Joséphine's.
Does anyone have pics of the siblings as children?

Thanks a lot.

Together with their 4 children Philippe & Marie Flanders formed a close knit and loving family. A gifted, clever, serious minded young man, their eldest son Baudoin was a great favourite. His brother & sisters worshipped him, especially Henriette to whom he was the closest. He was also very popular with King Léopold II, Queen Marie Henriette and their youngest daughter Clémentine who was madly in love with him.

During the winter of 1891, Princess Henriette fell severely ill with influenza and Baudoin spent a lot of time at her bedside. He caught a cold which degenerated into pneumonia and he died on January 22. Henriette was still convalescent and very weak at the time and during a few days her brother's death had to be concealed from her (it must have been extremely difficult for her parents to go and see her as though nothing had happen). When her mother finally broke the dreadful news to her, Henriette could not believe it at first and kept on asking after her brother. She was so shocked that she fainted.

A bio of Baudoin was published in 1938 : Le Prince Baudoin. Frère aîné du Roi Albert by Louis Wilmet.

Henriette's twin, Joséphine, died of convulsions aged only a few months. Both Joséphines were of course named after their maternal grandmother.

I know of no photobook on the Belgian royal family. I wish someone would do one because I am much interested in them (especially Léopold, Philippe, Charlotte and their immediate offspring). The closest to a photobook I can think of is Bijoux des Reines et Princesses de Belgique by Christophe Vachaudez. It focusses on the jewels of the Belgian royal family but contains a couple of gorgeous pics of both Queen Marie Henriette & Marie of Flanders as young women in court dress. I have never seen these pics anywhere else. Unfortunately I do not own the book.

Philippe & Marie were married in Berlin in 1867. Here is what Vicky, the Prussian crown princess, wrote to her mother Queen Victoria on this occasion :
"We have just acccompanied the dear young couple with the Hohenzollern family to the station, & had the satisfaction of seeing perfect happiness written unmistakeably on the beaming faces of dear good Philippe & his dear young wife. The marriage ceremony was very splendid. I will send you a better account of it than I can give you myself through one of the ladies. Dear Marie looked very pretty though I thought the dress heavy, tasteless & unbecoming - her pretty manner & expression quite made one forget that. The church is one of the ugliest I have ever beheld. ... It made me quite sad when I thought of sweet Stephanie [Marie's sister] whom I saw standing before the same altar looking like an angel ! Marie has not that sweet touching expression ; she is much livelier & has rather a roughness in her manner - which I thought much gone off now. She is a dear girl. Her features are much more regular than Stephanie's - her profile is faultless but she has not the charm of her sister nor the lovely skin & eyes. She was delighted with your present  - & told me to tell you so again & again. Philippe also sends you his respectful love - as do Leopold & Antoinette [Marie's brother & his wife Infanta Antonia of Portugal], who is in the greatest beauty & invariably admired".
Queen Victoria had the greatest regard for Marie's father Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen & regretted the family was catholic. She would have liked to have some of Karl Anton's children as sons/daughters-in-law.

Philippe was profoundly deaf, extremely intelligent and cultured. He didn't marry until he was 30. It was thought that Marie was picked for him but regardless the 2 were well-suited and happy together. They were a well-liked couple and their family life the opposite of Leopold II's.
