Your trips to the Crimea - opinions/questions/help
« on: October 16, 2005, 11:27:52 PM »
Beware of corrupt Ukrainian police! They are happy to spot foreign tourists and check up their documents and money expecting bribes (especially on the Crimean Peninsula). They may ask you to show them all the money you?ve got. Just to see if you don?t have counterfeit notes. While checking, they may try to steal some of the notes. If it doesn?t work, they always may say that the notes are counterfeit and they must confiscate them. How to avoid such unpleasant encounters? It?s easy. Don?t dress like a tourist! Do not wear sandals, shorts or a huge backpack with an internal frame. I met a group of Polish tourists who looked like this. They said the police stopped them on the street sometimes three or four times a day! Nothing like that ever happened to me. Nor to people I travelled with. But we wore neither sandals nor shorts, and our backpacks were discreet? But if such an unpleasant situation does happen to you, the best solution is to say, ?I?ve already been inspected today?. They may believe you and go away. If they don?t, you have no choice but show your passport and money to them. In more serious cases, you may try to threat them by taking out your mobile phone and saying, ?Ya zvonyu po moyemu posol?stvu (I?m calling my embassy)?. This should help.

Incredible! I've been to Ukraine 3 times and nothing like this ever happened to me. I never went down to Crimea, though. My wife is a Ukrainian national who speaks the language with no accent. Might that offer some protection from things like this? Please advise. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'll be going there in a hurry now.

Stories like this make me kind of hesitant of travelling to Eastern Europe and Russia :(

I'd love to see Russia one day but I prefer travelling individually or with a few over joining big tour groups and apparently Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe aren't really the places to make such trips. Especially seeing I know no Russian at all.

I have heard that going to the Ukraine is unsafe.  Is this really true?  I understand the police situation as I just returned from Indonesia and the police try the same things.  I am more worried about crime such as robberies, etc.  Is Kiev and the Yalta penninsula ok for Westerners.  I agree not to dress like a tourist but its easy to spot an American regardless of what they are wearing

I always thought it was a total disaster the Crimea being handed to the new nation of the UKraine. The vast majority of people living there are in fact Russian.

I will be spending two days in Livadia/Sevastopol early September, and thanks to this forum I’ve been able to gather much information about the Royal Palaces in the area. Now I need to whittle down my list and I’m hoping that someone who has been in the area in the last year or two will be able to help me out.

Livadia
Kichkine
Dulber
Chaeer
Kharax

As I will also be visiting Chekov’s house and the Cathedral in Yalta, the Khan’s Palace near Sevastopol, and the Resurrection church in Foros it’s going to be a very busy two days. Would welcome suggestions about the palaces... after Livadia, which two would you consider the most important to visit?

I will have an English speaking private guide who will arrange all the entrances ahead of time; he said in an email that he would try to arrange entry to the Yusupov Palace as well.

Thanks in advance for your help~

I went to the Ukraine last summer and spent just under a week in Yalta. It's true to say that you're bound to get around better if you can speak some Russian, and although I was a little wary of walking around the streets at night, I didn't really feel threatened at any time.

Whilst there, I went to Livadia (twice!) and Massandra - they are so incredibly beautiful! I took loads of pictures and am dying to go back!!

Trip of a life time!!!

I wonder if someone could help me. My husband and I would like to go on a cruise to visit the Crimea. The only company I found that has a cruise, from Kiev to Odessa is Imperial Cruises. Does anyone know this company? I called Grand Circle Travels, and I was told that Russian ships can not sail in Ukraine due to government regulations. The Imperial Cruise seems to be the only one that does these cruises. I would like some information before we book. Any information will be very appreciated.

Thanks
Amelia
