Berleburgs

Can the Berleburg children of Princess Benedikte be made HH's, Prince/Princesses of Denmark?  Has this subject been broached before? What is required, other Her Majesty, to make this so.  They don't necessarily have to been in the line of succesion. IMHO, out of appreciation to Benedikte and her children who do represent Denmark, I feel that this should be granted.

Michelle,

Benedikte's children do not carry out duties for Denmark.  The children do not have succession rights (although there are views that they might) due to qualifications set up at the time of the marriage.  Benedikte's children would have need to be educated and raised in Denmark (there were more qualifications as well) in order to have succession rights.   Gustav was born in Germany.  He is a citizen of Germany, not Denmark.  The two girls were born in Denmark, but did not have Danish citizenship because their father was a German citizen.  Both aquired Danish nationalty as adults.  Gustav's future will be involved with Berleburg (actually, he already owns the estate - for tax purposes the estate was turned over to him a few years ago.)

Frederik IX did give the HH to Richard and to the three children - it is their rank in Denmark, rather than serene highness, which doesn't exist in Denmark.

Yes, of course.  Alexandra is known as HH Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein Berleburg.  She has not taken her husband's name, apparently.

Gustav was engaged some years ago, to a french lady as I remember (i think she attended the funeral of Queen Ingrid), but it ended with many rumors..

Does anyone have any baby photos of the Berleburg family. Isn't Berleburg a Principality? Why is it not reigning?

In the Russian Empire, many of the naturalised Princes Sayn-Wittgenstein Berleburg were granted the style of Serene; the remaining Princes Sayn-Wittgenstein Berleburg in Russia using the style of Illustrious.

In Germany prior to 1918, the Princes Sayn-Wittgenstein Berleburg were accorded the style of Serene Highness or Durchlaucht in German.

Prince Richard retained his German citizenship?  I did not know that.  I was under the impression that when Danish dynasts married a foreigner they had to give up their citizenship and take Danish citizenship or the dynast would lose his/or succession rights.   I know that Princess Alexandra had to give up her citizenship when she married Prince Joachim and become a Danish citizen.

How or why was Princess Benedikte exempted from this?
