Tudor Mottos
« on: October 19, 2005, 10:23:38 AM »
Hello everyone.  :D

I was just wondering, did the members of the Tudor family have royal mottos, such as QEII's, which is 'Dieu et mon droit'.

I know Richard III did - loyalty binds me (can't remember the Latin) and Henry, Duke of Buckingham - think of me often.

Does anyone else know any? Anyone else interested? Thanks!

Very apt for you, Kim. And mine would be - 'I'm in school/at the computer delete which ever is inappropriate.'  ;D

Henry VIII's was 'Coure Loyall' - True Heart.

This isn't exactly a Tudor motto ( is there a page of for Stuart mottoes?), but the motto of Mary, Queen of Scots was ''In my end is my begining'', I believe, although I don't know the latin for that.

In the John Guy book on Mary (excellent) he points out that this motto ("en ma fin est mon commencement") actually belonged to Mary's mother Mary of Guise. It went with her symbol which was a phoenix.

Mary's own symbol was a marigold, and the motto which went with it was "Sa Virtu m'attire"-  "It's virtue attracts me" referring to the flower turning towards the sun. It was also a near anagram of "Marie Stuart"!

Mary later adopted her mother's motto when she was imprisoned - as she thought that it was appropriate to her own situation, and the fact that her son would live if she herself was executed.

Thanks! I have always found it such an interesting motto, and so true, as it did replica Mary's situation well. It is interesting that she got it from her mother.
