I need translation help in the Forum!

Hello,
A comment from a user in another thread gave me the idea for this thread. Since so many users are now coming here who do not speak English well or as a first language, they may have trouble understanding everything in here. SO, Please use this thread to ASK for help, as I am certain that there are many members who can translate the English for you.

I know for a fact that there are excellent people who can translate what you want to understand into Spanish, French, German, Russian and Japanese at the very least. So Please dont be SHY, ask for help here in understanding the posts if you do not understand the English!!

There is also a site that can do the translating for you, albeit not always accurately, but it's not bad in a bind as it gives you the general idea and is good for individual words or short phrases. You can choose the languages you want to translate to and from.

Dear Helen,

I have a friend who does know English, so I write to him in French. I use one of these translation services initially because I have trouble adding the accent marks on my keyboard. Once I have the basic translation and accents, I re-write/ rearrange the paragraphs and adjust the grammar because these online translations are at the very least slighthy flawed, some being absolutely usless. The one that I use for French, Italian and Spanish and is about 70% correct is http://www.freeetranslation.com

These translation machines are really useless.
we tried that soem time ago at the crown princess mary message board. But I have to say: I could understand the danish originals better than these translations from the online tranbslator. And I don't speak a word of Danish.

So if somebody needs a translation into or help in German, I will try to help.

Guys, I didn't create these online translators, so please don't blame me  !

As I mentioned, the online translators are not too accurate, and I wouldn't use them for anything important, particularly for long phrases or sentences. But to get a general idea of something, or for individual words or short phrases they work fine. When you are in a bind, it is better than nothing... That was the reason I posted this link, not so that they are used instead of anything else....

I've got a couple Russian books I think I'd like to have translated. They're fairly short, but it'll take months to do it myself!

Can anyone give me some hints on how to go about getting this done? And perhaps a ballpark figure for cost?

Are you familiar with it? It includes Aleksei's diary from 1916, as well as letters from him & his family, and two medical bulletins from the Spala crisis.

Yes, we've been working on little bits of Pered Rasstrelom here and there. But there are many more letters -- some from Alix to Vyrubova that I don't think I've seen elsewhere. (Though I haven't cross-checked Anya's memoirs yet).

I also have Alix's diary from 1917-1918. My Russian is decent -- in a classroom, or a restaurant anyway -- but when I try something like this, I suddenly feel like a second-grader! My vocabulary in particular is just not up to the task.

This is a great idea for a thread . . . one whose time has definitely come, given the fact that the AP's worldwide membership continues to expand.

As someone who just barely speaks her own language    I have frequently been thwarted in my Romanov research by both French and Russian texts. While this thread was specifically conceived for participants who speak and read English as a second language, I'll add that I continue to appreciate the translations of documents in  French, Russian, and other European languages for those of us in the United States who lack a multi-lingual background!

Sarah, I just remembered that I did translations of some of the diary entries from this book, I think it was under the Alexei topic,  thread called something like "Alexei's diaries". Maybe you can find it. In the meantime, as I mentioned to you in a PM, since I have this book, I will try to do some more after December....
