This seems to me a very strange question. Everyone is important.
In her lifetime

I agree with this,
We all know parts of these majestic peoples lives, but we cant even HOPE to know what they were really like, how can we?
We cant think that we know these people, because if we were to ask say..Nicky, who was his favourite daughter, how could he answer? and maybe Tatiana or any of the Romanov's werent like how we think, we may think that they would be "cold and aloof" and they actually werent, or maybe they were? Who knows?
Reports on them cant be used to know the last Imperial Family of Russia, because everyone has their own opinions on people, and Russian Grand Duchesses or Dukes or the Tsar and Tsarina are no different.
Some people may say "I see grumpiness in the Tsarina's eyes" and someone else may say "I see melancholy in the Tsarina's eyes" noone can know what she was thinking, we just know from reports and history what they may of been like, but we cant judge people from them.
I like happy and jolly people who can have a laugh:
therefore (according to reports and history) I [glb]wouldnt [/glb]of got on well with the Tsarina, Tatiana and possibly not Olga, and I [glb]would[/glb] of got on better with the Tsar, Anastasia and Maria.
But we cant know this, and I like not knowing, because now they are gone, they are forever unique and we cant compare anything to them, because we never met them, or knew them, we only have pictures and rare pieces of footage to know them by.
I love slowly finding out more and more about the Imperial Family but i always know that I shall never know them completley and i'm content with that  :)

sorry if I sounded at all hypocritical or disagreeable with what you were discussing

Somehow you did, but I think you're only expressing your thoughts as many of us here does.

But for that ranking thing, for me I would put Tatiana as the most important coz she's my favorite Romanov and  though I can't relate to her on somethings, her sense of responsibility is very crucial especially to her parents. And yes, like what did Lanie have said, people dont tend to relate to her but that individuality makes her more intriguing.

Everyone has a opinion that they can express good or bad..Tatiana is someone people can't relate to always, but one who intrigues us nonetheless. She is perhaps the most intriguing of the grand duchesses. I should have phrased that differently perhaps ''Can you relate to Tatiana''?  :)

Yes, I think intriguing is a good word to use about her personality, myself. I think that is very true. She isn't really known, and just when we begin to know her, she slips away from us. She seems like she might have been much like Alexandra in personality had she lived, and yet maybe more practical than Alexandra who often was more emotional than practical.

The fact is that I can't relate to Tatiana as well as I do to her sisters. Sad, but true. I can't said exactly why.

The amount of information we have about her is almost the same we have about the other three Grand Duchess, but I can have my deep sympathy for all the others and only partially for her. Olga is my favorite, for she is the dreamer, the one who feels thinks deeple, who is very religious in a more spiritual sense than Tatiana and that loved to read and know things...Maria was the sweet one, the romantic, the beatiful shy girl who sometimes could feel unloved and wanted to have a family of herself as soon as possible...Anastasia was all life, she liked to make practical jokes and sometimes had very funny answers to adult people. But Tatiana....I just don't know. She was too formal, and I think she had not a lot of imagination...not even to perform pranks, as Anastasia did.

i agree with you in all the points you made about the GDs

Tatiana always seemed to me as the shy one, who always kept things to her self.
Confinded only in her mother and older sister.

She seemed to be the mother out of the four of them, lets say the most responsible.
i kind of felt sorry for her, just a bit. I don't know why i feel that, but i do.

she was a beauty just like her other sisters, but with the asian look of her eyes, seemed to set
her apart from her other sisters. (atleast i see it)

She ended her life very short, and very sadly. i wish i could have helped them, she seemed slightly depressed
for me.

You raised an interesting point. I think we do know as much about Tatiana as her sisters, but it seems we don't. For all we know, ( which, is truthfully, little enough), about Tatiana, we can't say what she was, yet we can say what her sisters were. This is why she is intriguing, she intrigues us, because she has the same information known, and yet it seems we know less, I think that's because her personality is hard to pinpoint, and yet it seems if we get down to it, we do know her personality, so I am not sure why she still intrigues us? Does anyone have a theory?

I used to think Tatiana was an enigma and she was my least favorite of the girls, but after reading anecdotes about her I changed my mind and now she is my favorite after Anastasia, of course.  ;)

I think some people don't relate to her as well as Olga, Maria, or Anastasia because she was exactly like her mother wanted her to be: she was regal, knew her position, was responsible, elegant, fairly intelligent, reserved, and a proper young woman for that era. She felt it was her duty to care for her younger siblings and make sure her family was doing well. She was not without imagination, she simply knew when to have it. She probably had a lot of sympathy for her mother, especially when she was ill, and wanted to help her as much as she could. It's hard to relate to someone like that; with that much devotion and responsibility. Especially in this day and age. But if you read anecdotes about her, you will see that she had a sense of humor and imagination just like OMA did. Like the time OTMAA were waving to the people and after a while Tatiana got tired of it and just stuck her tongue out at them.
"Господь им дал дар по молитвам их размягчать окаменелые наши сердца за их страдания..Мне думается, что если люди будут молиться Царской Cемье, оттают сердца с Божией помощью."

I think it would be great if there were an English version of the book "Sisters of Mercy" as then we would be able to see more what the sisters were like. Tatiana seems to have been a prolific letter writer, and while I haven't had a chance to read it properly yet (my copy of the book arrived yesterday) I think that by reading their own impressions of the world, we may form quite different ideas about OTMA than we might have previously held. I have found Maria to be a very boring diarist, but a humourous letter writer for example.

I think Tatiana is quite different from the impression a lot of you seem to have, going by the few parts of her diaries and letters I have already read. She seemed a good mix of fun, out-going-ness and duty, she writes in her diaries about bike riding with her sisters and swimming etc. Don't forget, she was the most popular of the sisters among the people, whatever charisma she had, it was what appealed to the Russian public in the early 20th century. Had she lived, I am sure she'd have become a very well-known figure outside of Russia as well.
