Partially painted photograph of the Comtesse and her son Giorgio, 1862-67:

From "La Divine Comtesse", Photographs of the Countess de Castiglione:

Possessive and neglectful by turns, the Countess identified obsessively with her son, and commissioned a large number of photographs of him. No child of the period was ever photographed so frequently or so well as Giorgio.

Some of the strangest photographs dreamed up by the Countess are those in which she presents her six- or seven-year old son as a miniature version of herself. With his bare shoulders emerging from the drapes so prized by Nadar, his long hair wound into a low chignon and adorned with flowers, Giorgio's coquettish poses offer a faithful reflection of his mother.

After that sort of treatment, I am surprised Giorgio didn't end up an axe murderer or something of that sort, but in fact I gather he died at an early age (allegedly of smallpox - but wouldn't he have been innoculated?).

What a wonderful collection of photographs, thanks to have them share. Wonderful book too. Virginia was an eccentric woman and was able to exploit her image with modern attitude.

Aloha from Kaua'i!

I've been fascinated with the "legendary" Countess di Castiglione for a couple of years now.  On my first visit to Paris I saw the famous
photograph of her looking thru the cut-out piece - it was startling to me for being so modern in composition, but was from the 1860's.

I find it difficult to find out much more than basics of her life - I visited Librarie Galignani last year in Paris and found a book entitled
"La Castiglione, Vies et metamorphoses" by Nicole G. Albert.  Unfortunately there is no English version, and I've been laboriously trying to
translate the French into English with limited success.  I have a little French, but not enough to read a book like this I'm afraid.

Her photos are amazing and show a woman who truly seems to be infatuated with her image - and the tableau that she created with Pierre-Louis Pierson are unbelievably beautiful and alive.  The person behind the photos remains elusive however, and I can't tell if she was truly a narcissist or a woman who knew how to manage her beauty - and men - to her advantage - or both!

I know that the legend of when her beauty faded, she retreated behind the drapes of her apartment at the Place Vendome - and only ventured out at night so that no one could see the ravages of time on her beauty.  However you see photos of her in her "older" years, and that would seem to bely that story.

Some say she gradually became mad and delusional - I have no clue - but I would like to learn more about her life.

Does anyone know a book in English about her life?  The Metropolitan Museum of Art book devoted to her photos is unbelievably expensive, and most photos have been reproduced elsewhere.....

I plan on visiting her grave this September at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris - she has been gone such a long time, but her image and life continue to fascinate!!

There are only two books in english:

La Divine Comtesse: Photographs of the Countess de Castiglione (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series) by Pierre Apraxine

Art After Death: Conversations With the Countess of Castiglione by Chris Kubick and Ann Walsh

The other books are only in italian or in french.
