Hi Georgiy,

Robert Bianchi is actually a specialist on classic and middle eastern art.

There is a catalog which was edited by Vilinbakhov which has the same title, but this catalog is larger at pp 406. It is a splendid book which showcased 700 Russian Imperial items in the U.S. in 1998.

I am wondering whether the Bianchi catalog is the condensed version of the U.S. exhibition held in London in 1999?

I can highly recommend Vilinbakhov. If I am correct, then IMHO it would be better to purchase the more complete version of this exhibition.  :)

I hope this hasn't been posted before, but given my luck in this section, it will have. :P I know that there are many books and catalogues from different exhibitions that share the title Nicholas and Alexandra: The last Tsar and Tsarina, but I was quite curious with this one I discovered on Amazon.co.uk. The picture I've seen before on other books, but it has the words "Hermitage" and "Amsterdam" written on the side. Is this something new? Has anyone seen this before?

This is from an exhibition in the Netherlands.  There's a thread somewhere about it.  I just saw it on Amazon the other day too.  I heard the exhibition was very good!

I have also wondered how different this catalog really is compared to all the other exhibition catalogs that have been produced recently.

Does anyone know whether this publication offers something really new?

I bought the book last year for about 6 euro or so. It dind't teach me much, but there are very nice pictures in them of different russian things in the Hermitage. Don't expect to find everything on the romanovs. There a many orthodox icons, clothes, paintings,...furniture from the palaces, uniforms, medals,...
Half a year ago I went to the hermitage in Amsterdam and saw it a 'in real life". It was a very good exhibition, just no one realy knew a lot about the imperial family so it was fun watching people listening to me when I was explaining things to a friend of mine. At the end of the exhibition there was a video of old romanov home movies that ended in the girls dancing on the Standart.

Hi Lyss,

Thank you for your honest appraisal.

This catalog appears to be exactly as I suspected. Having been to the Hermitage it appears that I can direct my attention elsewhere.  ;)

The catalogue of the Broughton exhibition several years ago in the US was certainly far more worthwhile and included descriptions of many of the exhibits also shown in Amsterdam.

Do you know if that catalogue is still available on amazon or elsewhere?

I went to "Nicholas and Alexandra: At Home With the Last Tsar and His Family". I bought so many things in the gift shop that I wasn't able to buy the catalouge.  Does anyone know where I could purchase it online?

Its on eBay often.  Most of the eBay listings I have seen have been by Paul Gilbert / Gilbert's Royal Books.  He probably has several for sale.

by Scottish & Newcastle (Collaborator), Clarocada Russia (Collaborator)

Has anyone seen or read this book.  It looks like it's the exhibition book from Scotland but I'm wondering if this is the same exhibition that toured the US-- Newark, NJ, Cincinnatti, OH etc.  I bought the exhibition book in Newark and am interested in adding this to my christmas list if the exhibit items are different than the US tour.

Thanks for any help!

Book Description
This elegantly illustrated and beautifully produced publication is a catalogue of a Royal Museum of Scotland exhibition that opens in July of 2005 and promises to be "one of the finest cultural events of the year" in Great Britain. It details the public and private lives of the last of the ill-fated Russian royal family, the Romanovs. The curators selected pieces from the extraordinary collections in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg with its state and personal possessions. These items belonging to Nicholas II, the last Emperor and Czar of Russia, and Czarina Alexandra include rare Fabergé jewelry, medals they displayed in ceremonies, their military uniforms, treasured photographs, porcelain items ranging from ornate clocks to tableware embedded with gold, silver and precious gems, toys their children played with, clothing they wore, great paintings that hung in royal residences, as well as icons and books from the family libraries. When viewed from our perspective, the lavishness of these objects and their lifestyle followed by the bleak events of the Russian Revolution serve as a potent history lesson. Chapters on the St. Petersburg palaces, Nicholas’ coronation and on Russia during his reign make for engaging reading.

I saw this today on Amazon, Robert, and as it is not reviewed yet, I don't know anything about it, but I was very curious as this is one of the first new books on the subject of Nicholas II's family to come out in a while...if anyone has seen this in stores and got to browse through it, were there any interesting photographs or descriptions of items not seen in the other exhibitions? Thanks!

Merry Christmas to all!! :D :D

It is a different exhibit from this summer in Scotland. I'm sure that when Tsaria emerges from Xmas she will fill  you in further.

This book ?
I found the exhibition a bit of a let down, but I had just returned from St. Peteresburg. The same items they trot out for every show.
The catalogue itself is interesting, Especially since over half of it is translated from the original Dutch.  [Hermitage Amsterdam]. Nothing particularly new in either [the exhibit or the book]
