Scratched on a Windowpane
« on: October 26, 2005, 02:00:34 PM »
In Massie's N&A, he mentions that Nicholas and Alexandra scratched their names on the Italian House at Peterhof. Does this windowpane still exist? Is it viewable by the public?

I've also read that visitors to Ernie's Schloss Wolfsgarten in Darmstadt scratched their names on the windowpanes and walls there. I imagine it's quite a collection of royalty! Do these names still exist? The "A Royal Family" thread in the movies section also mentions that Nixa and Minnie scratched THEIR names on a windowpane at a Danish palace. Does that still exist?

You betcha!

It's Nicholas II, by Marvin Lyons. Here's a search for used copies on bookfinder: Nicholas II, by Lyons

It's got great pictures from the IF's holidays in Denmark. Also there are a few shots of events I'd read about but never seen photos of -- N&A's state visit to Paris after their coronation, the French president's visit to Russia in 1914, etc.

I think I remember reading that Mountbattens daughters also scratched their names on Wolfsgarten window pane - as Prinzess von Battenberg

Many famous people scratched their names on that drawingroom windowpane in Darmstadt. It would surprise some people to know that Mick Jagger's name is on the same windowpane.

There is also a windowpane in the private quarters of the Imperial Family in the Winter Palace, scratched by Alexandra whilst she was sitting on the windowsill watching a military review outside. It is still there today.
