I thought they die out in the male line. There only the decendents through the female line from Infantas Antonia and Maria Ana.  :(

I recommend that you review Guy Stair Sainy's genealogy of the Royal House of Bourbon at the first two links below:

I forgot to note two other branches of the House of Bourbon: Bourbon-Orléans (one time Royal House of France) and Orléans-Bragança (Imperial House of Brazil).

Hello  :)

I was thinking of the change of the Spanish succession law, and came up with the idea of the tremendous injustice that it would be if such a change was to be retroactive if a son is born to the Princes before the modification...

A) The succession lies in the King's children: King Juan Carlos has two elder daughters and one son, they have also children of their own

B) The current law prefers males to females

C) The Succession is to be changed to give females the same right as males

D) If a son is born before the change and he looses his right to his elder sister, then...

E) Prince Felipe, on the grounds of retroactivity and justice, should loose is title of Prince of Asturias, which sould pass to:

F) his sister Infanta Doña Elena, and if she doesn´t want it, to her children, or to her her sister and nephews...

It seems much more logic to me...I have nothing against femals on the throne, actually they seem to be very good rulers...but in peaceful times no royal should loose a right that he has born with...

These are just conjectures...Nothing might happen...No son may be born...

I'm just asking if is it the idea of sexual equality behind this story...or just the beautiful baby's?

Thank you.

Does anyone know what Infanta Leonor's full name is, or will we know after her baptism?

Ps. the name Leonor reminds me of Leonor Varela; she portrayed the Greek Queen Cleopatra of Egypt in the tv movie CLEOPATRA, co-starring Billy Zane and Timothy Dalton as Antony and Ceasar. ;) I think it's a pretty name!

Sometimes children were also given the name of their godparents at their christening, and it's not impossible nor implausible that she'll get Sofía among her names if the Queen turns out to be her godmother (I have an idea Queen Sofía is not the godmother of any of her grandchildren; the King if I remember right is the godfather of his eldest grandson, Don Felipe Juan Froilán de Todos los Santos (omni sancti) Marichalar y Borbón.

On a side note, I think an Asturian name (Princess Letizia comes from Asturias and the Prince is Prince of Asturias, so there's a strong bond with that Autonomous Community (Comunidad Autónoma)) might also be used; before Infanta Leonor's birth it was said that, if it was a boy, they'd call it Pelayo, the name of the Asturian leader that started the "reconquista" of Spain several centuries ago. The idea isn't all that ludicrous because the above-mentioned Froilán got his name after the patron-saint of the Galician town of Lugo, and the boy's parents are the Duke and Duchess of Lugo.... time will tell though :) We can only speculate.

I think Sofía might well be among her names (if they DO give her a few, who knows if she'll be only Leonor, though I doubt it), and Isabel. Mercedes might also be possible since it was the King's mother's name and has been in the family a few times already. Covadonga is an Asturian name though I don't know if they'd give it to her, but it's possible... time will tell.

She has already been christened in a surprisingly private ceremont¡y, in which no member of the nobility or royalty (except for those nobles belonging to the Royal Family and King Constantine of Greece) was invited... Leonor has received the name Leonor de Todos los Santos, which is not a typical name for a Spanish heir...

In my opinion, a fiasco, and if the Spanish Royal Family continues this way... monarchy will be abolished in 10 years...

However, for me a dynasty ends when the male line loses the throne and given who royals marry these days, chances are dear, lovable, darling little Leonor will end up marrying someone just as commoner as her mommy.  Hurrah then we will say to the new dynasty of Perez, Rodriguez, Campos, Gonzalez or something equally common-sounding.  Then again I most likely will not live long enough to see that debacle.

How I do agree with you Arturo ! I could not have put it better.

I have often heard spanish people say that they were more Juan Carlists than monarchists. Lots of them have known Spain as a republic and may not be particularly attached to the royal institution. I sometimes wonder whether the throne of Spain will survive King Juan Carlos' death.

Spain loves dearly their Royals...Monarchy will survive...in fact I'd said the institution it's quite safe...luckily these royals give their people good reasons to be respected...let's hope it will remain so... ;)

I'm sorry to say that Spain's Royal Family's prestige is going down faster than we think. The ceremony wasn't at all like everyone expected, and should have been conducted in a more public way, not to mention the choice of names; I am sure more than one name should have beena dded to the already given Leonor, as it's happened throughout the times. Think twice next time Borbones...
