Indeed Marie was there. Who else but these girls can make a pile of hay and logs seem so charming? They look like they are pretending to be rare animals themselves ....and they seemed amused.... while taking a photo, they often seem to be thinking of how it will look later and the laughter it will bring. Much of their amusement when the bald photo in AP was taken, was over thinking of their parents reaction upon seeing the print

Yes, things that would seem so very simple and ordinary to an average person, (like a pile of hay and logs,) was probably looked upon like something fun and exotic to those girls so un-used to such things. Likely it appealed to them firstly because their parents would be so shocked, (especially their mother!) and because it was so ordinary and regular-citizen-ish. I'm sure they'd have gotten a kick out of the general public of the time seeing those photos! I bet that even if they were labeled as being of the Grand Duchesses, nobody would believe it. Or if they did, they'd be scandalized beyond anything!

But that was when they were happiest, hiding in hay lofts and such.

I think it's more likely 1899 because in this shot of pics appears a baby with Ot - i suppose it's Maria.
