How does this book compare to Coryne Hall's Little Mother of Russia: A Biography of Empress Marie Feodorovna?

I have not read either title, but in terms of basic format differences I can tell you that this book is primarily a Russian-language photoalbum, while Hall's book is an English-language biography with much more emphasis on text. To some extent this would be an apples vs. oranges comparison.

My late grandfather was a seaman on H.M.S. Marlborough, I have a pearl-handled revolver which, he told me, was given to him by a princess whilst on the voyage to Malta from Yalta.
I still have his service record which does show he was a member of the crew at that time. JLC

I read the Coryne Hall book recently and greatly enjoyed it. It gives a good description of the differences between Alexandra and Marie F.I think it's one of the top Romanov books. It doesn't say Alexander III was an alcholic. It states drink contributed to his death a bit- which was from nephritis. Alexander III didn't have a drinking issue- that was something that was a common inaccurate belief in the Soviet era, wasn't it? I don't feel this book says he had a drinking issue per se, although it states that some drinking may have played some role in his death. It doesn't ruin the book though, or play much of a role in the book. Overall, Alexander III is portrayed in a positive way here. There might be some inaccuracies describing his death scene- but it doesn't mar the book.

The book is quite accurate in it's description of the Imperial family's lives and personalities, and gives a an excellent overview of MF's life. It's kind of expensive sometimes, but it really should be more widely read. I had read Coryne Hall's other book about Xzenia and found it somewhat boring- the style wasn't that interesting. This book is totally different- very fast, interesting, reading although a long book. The Xzenia bio was coauthored so obviously it must have been the coauthor who had a hand in making that book less interesting, as Coryne Hall by herself is excellant. Because of the previous Xzenia bio, I was afraid this might be like that, but it's totally different. Not that that book is bad- it just isn't as riveting as this one. This book does kind of portray the more negative view of Alexandra though that fits as MF was Alexandra's opposite and may have taken the more negative view of her. I would highly recomend this book.

In my opinion  Coryne Hall's book about Minnie, "little Mother of Russia", is a good biography about Minnie. It is well researched and gave me a lot of news about her. Before reading it I knew little about Minnie's relationship with Nixa or about the relationship with Sasha (Aleander III) nor did I know something about her relationship with her in-laws, especially the good relationship with her mother-in-law.

No question. Corynne Hall's book of Minny is the best there is in English.

At present we (Yalta Friends Club) prepare a memorial event devoted to 90th anniversary of Marlborough departure from Yalta (April, 11) with exhibition, memorial stella etc. More at http://yalta.nxt.ru (but mostly in Russian, sorry)

Tisdall's book is more like fiction than a scholarly biography.

Svetabel - I was wondering why you think this. I have read Tisdall and didn't find too many contradictions to other works (apart from the Kschessinska one, which I have to admit is dubious) I would hate to use it a a source if you know something I don't and think it is unreliable and so would be most grateful if you could clarify this for me.

There are much better books out there then the Tisdall book. Tisdall wrote the bio many years ago when there was very little access to archives and such, so much of his book is based on rumours and wrong information. For instance Tisdall writes at lenght about MF visiting Russia after she got engaged to GD Nicholas Alexandrovich, but the visit never happend.
As Svetabel wrote, more fiction at times than actual schorlary, but a nice book.

Fun book though...For the real thing it is hard to beat "Little Mother Of Russia" By Hall.

Thanks, Kmerov, that's what I wanted to answer ))). Exactly my point. Also I have 2 very good Russian bios on Empress Marie and in comparing with them Tisdall's looks really a fiction. Had I been a starter in the Romanov hsitory it would be a nice reading for me.
