I never knew those were balalaikas! Sort of ugly, aren't they?

Yes, I think these are balalaikas. : ) As for how ugly they are - I don't find them that ugly, personally, since I've learned how to play one when I was little - but I'm not that good anymore...

There is also photograph of Imperial Children, taken at Livadia Palace, cca. 1912, labeled as 'Aleskei plays a balalaika' , but I can't find balalaika at all. Most probably author meant that he was dancing by listening it.  ;-).

I think the caption actually came from Alexandra's letter, also on the page. It doesn't have anything to do with the picture. I made that mistake myself!
