The Anhalt family
« on: November 02, 2005, 11:28:14 PM »
If anyone has any pics of Aribert or any of the Anhalt family please post them.  I know his marriage to Princess Marie-Luise of Schleswig-Holstein was not a happy one and they div and had no children.  Was Aribert  gay?  why did his  parents blame Marie-Louise for the break up?

His brother Edward also div his wife and Fredrick and his wife had no children.

Marie Louise and Aribert at the time of their marriage in 1891.  He was supposedly found in bed with another man.

Aribert was homosexual ..and fond of stable boys.  His behavior was alluded to in the media of the day - and how he was banned for some time from Anhalt.

Though he was regent of Anhalt when the monarchy fell in 1918. Maybe everyone had forgotten about it by then.

She was just the scapegoat. He had 'given her permission'  ::) to go on holiday to America but in her absence his homosexuality was discovered and it was easier to blame her for 'deserting her marital duties' than to add further scandal. His allegations against M-L were, according to her autobiography, disgusting and completely unfounded. She must have been deeply deeply wounded (unsurprisingly) because writing that, all those years later, her anger still comes over in the book.

She was summoned home by her father-in-law, wasn't she, but she ignored him? Then QV sent a telegram saying 'send my granddaughter home to me' or something like that. Who could disobey such a summons!

I don't know if he summoned her--I thought it was the opposite. Basically said don't come back--you're now divorced. QV did send for her to come back--don't mess with one of her relatives.

I do not think I would mess with QV either.  We are talking about a woman who charmed the "socks" off Bismark!  Read Bismarks memiors of QV takes ones breath away.

There is no question that poor Marie Louise, who as Edward VII said "came back to us as she left," wa the innocent party in this mess.  Aribert and the Anhalts behaved abominably in the entire matter.

Poor Marie Louise never accepted this kind of one-sided divorce and considered herself a married woman. Since Aribet did not marry again, she was in kind of limbo between wife & ex-wife.

I think she religion also played a part in her refusal to accept the divorce.

Thanks everyone for the pics & response.  One more question.  Why not get an annulment?  The marriage was never consummated was it?

I guess they didn't why else Uncle Bertie would say that "she came back as she left us" meaing a virgin. However Marie Louise said her vows in church, and as a religiously minded woman, she refused to recind her oath to God. The divorce was done through Anhalt house rule. I do not know if it was recongized in Britian. Poor Marie Louise did not even have her say in the matter...

She did however have a long relationship with another man.
