Well not sure that today was the best day to be living in Sydney - but I like it but then I think only a person born in Sydney can put up with a lot of the traffic hassles.  But it certainly has a fair bit going for it and you can still get out of the city and in to the country side in just over an hour ( unfortunately we can't compare to Adelaide in that regard).

I lived in Adelaide for all of 1995 - loved it, thought it was great but work moved me back to Sydney, otherwise I may have stayed.

No matter what people think--Adelaide is really a nice city. With Mike Rann as our Premier, I'm sure we'll keep going strong..

It took my parents 8 hours just to drive to Melbourne--can't imagine what it would be like for Sydney..

We drove from Adelaide  across the Hay Plain in December returning back to Canberra. We stopped overnight in Griffith to break our journey. Reaching the lake just outside the town was the nicest most refreshing thing in the hot + 40C summer sun.

The coastal road to Melbourne provides wonderful stops such as the magnificent escarpments along the shipwreck coast. Great wineries. Wonderful beaches around Lorne with yummie fresh seafood. We have traveled along this road many times, as well as taking the faster inland route.

The longest drive we enjoyed was returning from Perth across the Nullabor to Canberra after living in Perth for one year. Not boring as many claim. The desert is actually covered with fossilized seashells which I brought home. The whales along the coast were a very special sight, as were the steep escarpments just after Eucla (tiny border town between W. A. and S. A.)

I have been lucky, because I have criss-crossed Australia both by air and car many times. There is always something to see and do!

Once I flew from Adelaide to Broken Hill. [1989]

The plane was a  Kendall twin engine turbo prop [lots of engine noise].  I was the only American onboard.  Most of the people on the plane had gone to Adelaide for medical treatments.

We flew very low across the most God forbidden land I have ever seen.  It looked like the face of the Moon.  Not a tree in sight. [Null abor = no - trees]. The interior of Australia is vast.

We finally arrived at the desert  outback town of Broken Hill.  I stayed there for two days and had a good time.  Although some teenage boys thought I was totally crazy to visit the little town.

One treat was to go deep into an old silver mine by cable elevator.  I don't know if you can still do this. It might have been Dellprats Mine?

I stayed at a hotel over a pub....I was the only person there.  I ate take-away chicken and potato salad from a little shop down the street...very tasty and different.

The next afternoon I got the last seat on the last plane out of Broken Hill that week and flew back to my friends in Sydney.

It's a lot of fun to visit OZ.

I love Australia!  Does that count?

Douglas

Douglas,

I hereby appoint you to become an Honorary Australian (First Class).

Very few Aussies travel to Broken Hill which for those who do not know is a mining town.

Thanks for sharing some of your memories.

Ah, the "wide brown land for me."  :D

What did you see in Sydney?
 :)

I think Douglas has seen more of Australia than me.......In my opinion you cannot beat Sydney. It may have the traffic, but it is THE place to be.... ;D ;D You cannot beat Sydney harbour :D
Although the vineyards from SA are better than anything we have in the hunter.
Best wishes

You're right--nothing(no matter what the French say) can beat the Barrossa. ;D

Hello Belochka and friends:

Thank you.  I am now an Aussie.  Please send me a passport! ;D  I'd love to move to OZ.

When I was in Sydney I stayed out in the burbs near Blacktown with my friend Owen, his wife and kids.

.  I saw the Maritime Muse, Powerhouse Muse,  Prison Muse and Oz Muse of Art.   Also,  I  toured the Governors Mansion out near the  Opera House.  The tour guide, a lady, was more royal than the Queen.  Very amusing.

Once I went  into the Town Hall mayors office and toured around there by his office until I was caught by security and politely escorted out of the building.  Lots of fun.

Went to the Victoria Barracks and hung around with the soldiers for a while...they have a muse there.

Went to Bondi and then over to Tamarama.  Saw the police on their horses there on the beach.

Had lunch at the Fish Market.  Took the cat from Paramatta to Circular Quay.  Visited a catholic retirement home for old priests and saw their Icon painting and they offered me some nice chocolate cake and tea.

Spent the day where they restore old ships and yachts. Had tea in the headquarters office.

Asked a young attorney for directions near the courts buildings and he got very angry at me because he thought I was not polite enough.   I said, "Hey, do you know where the Governors Mansion is".. He did not like that approach. He was very upset and thought that I had no manners!

more later.

Your blue passport with its gold kangaroo and emu emblem is winging its way to you now.

Welcome Mate! Your sprig of yellow wattle awaits you!

Now you will hear the distant kookaburras perched on the branches of the tall eucalypts, while you enjoy a cool beer in the hot summer sun.

Too salty for my taste these days. But as a child I loved to spread vegemite or promite on buttered black bread for breakfast.

A meld of "cultural" delights in action!

:)   Has anyone seen the new Aussie movie Wolf Creek, after reading the reviews this week. I think I will spend $13.50 to see another movie, It is being promoted as being based on real events, but is a violent and disturbing slasher movie and is not based on real events, critics have said this movie will do what JAWS did to the seaside, stop tourists holidaying in the Australian outback, I think more people will want to go and see the site of the real meteor strike crater, as anyone been up to Broome, I think I will go and see Wallace and Gromit: the curse of the Were- Rabbit, Regards. Opal  ;)

Hey everyone

I am Melbourne, born and bred!  I live in Canterbury to the east of the city.... Melbourne, BTW, is the 'place to be', without doubt.  In the last 4 years I think we'v been teh most livable city in the world, this year we had to share the glory with Toronto.
