I ve seen images of Mathilde with the same lady at the ONB with the same label,. Weird, isnt it cause it doesnt look at all like Maria Theresa

Yes, you are right, Maria Theresa was more pretty than this lady...but who could be her then?

That's another Maria Theresa with Mathilde. That's future Queen of Bavaria, Maria Theresia (1849-1919), daughter of Archduchess Elisabeth from her 1st spouse.

On June 6th 1867 she attended a ball Hertzendorf, Austria, and she lit a cigarette. Not long after her father (according to Daniel de Rauglaudre, her governess) surprised her and she hid it between the foldings of her dress or sleeve. The fabric evidently caught fire, and she was unable to put it out. Tragically, she died before the guests, including her old adolescence sweetheart Ludwig Salvator, who from then on led a sad, emotionless life and retired discreetly to his Palace named "Miramar" (not to be confused with that one at Trieste) in Majorca (Spain). He was thought as a good candidate for his widowed niece, the dowager Countess of Girgenti and Princess of Asturias, MarĂa Isabel Francisca of Spain, but again, negotiations came to nothing. Archduke Albrecht survived his son, youngest daughter and wife, dying in 1895. He was a brave soldier and a quiet man. He became field marshal in 1888.

An entirely different account of the accident was given in the New York Times of 20 June 1867. The report said that Mathilde inadvertently trod on a "lucifer" match which was lying at her feet on the floor as she leaned out of the window talking to one of her relatives. Her Summer dress was in a blaze before she was aware of it etc etc. It was further mentioned that  Mathilde was the intended wife of Prince (future King) Humbert of Italy.  Humbert was in Paris when news of the accident to Mathilde reached him and he immediately left it was supposed for Vienna.

A small, but rare photograph of Mathilde playing some kind of piano.

Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.
