He was the son of Friedrich Karl and Princess Katharine  of Württemberg. They were first cousins--she being the daughter of Wilhelm I and the sister of Karl I; he was just a nephew of Wilhelm I but since Karl was childless, it went through FK to his son who became Wilhelm II.  (Karl was married to Grand Duchess Olga, daughter of Nicholas I).

His aunt Charlotte took the name Elena Pavlovna when she married (unhappily) Grand Duke Michael of Russia in 1824. He was the brother of her sister-in-law Olga.

His first wife was spouse of Marie of Waldeck-Pyrmont (sister of Helen, Duchess of Albany and of Queen Emma of the Netherlands,1857-1882) and Princess Charlotte of Schaumburg-Lippe.

By his first wife he had Pauline (1877-1965; who married Furst Friedrich of Wied in 1898) and Christoph (Jul 1880-Dec 1880). He and his 2nd wife were childless. Pauline was thus first cousin to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and Princess Alice of Albany (and later Countess of Athlone).

Succeeded his uncle in 1891 and abdicated in November 1918.

I'm not sure when it happened, but it was around here I think that the branch became Catholic.

Wilhelm II was an only son. His uncle Paul had died at age one and his other uncle August had married morganatically. The next in line had to go back to a distant relative, Alexander, and his line. Alexander, though, had contracted a morganatic marriage in 1835 with Grafin Claudine Rhedey. Their children were granted the surname of 'Teck'. Alexander's son, Francis, married Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, in 1866. (Queen Victoria created him Duke of Teck with the rank of 'Highness' in 1871) Their first child, Victoria Mary 'May', would become Queen of England in 1910 so it didn't work out too badly for this line considering Alexander's great-great-granddaughter sits on the throne of Great Britain while the Wurttemberg throne has been gone for almost 90 years.

Wilhelm of Württemberg was also one of two gay kings the country had before the fall of the monarchy in 1918.

Who was the other?

Did this make it difficult for his wife (either of them) or was it a mutally comfortable (for lack of better word) relationship ala Ernie and Onor?

I personally am not convinced that Ernst Ludwig was gay.  In his life we lack the name of a single male he was involved with.  What the accusations are based on are the ramblings of a nasty ex-wife and a nastier ex-mother-in-lw who did everything in her power to cover the many pecadillos of her daughters, and they were plenty.

In the Württemberg case on of the two Gay kings was even threatened by his parliament for giving too many favors to his lover, even raising the young man to the nobility!

The two Gay kings of Württemberg were Karl and Wilhelm II.  The first was the husband of Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaevna.  The second married twice, and produced one child from his first wife, a daughter by the name of Pauline, and who grew to be bigger than her cousin, Mary of Cambridge.  Pauline Württemberg was married to the Fürst of Wied.

Thanks Art. I almost didn't use Ernie in the example due to the reasons you name but went ahead anyway. Oh well.

Do you know how Wilhelm and his wives got on? Also did their sexuality play a part in Karl & Olga not having children or in Wilhelm and Charlotte or does it seem to just be a sad coincidence--sad being that it basically killed the line.

Pauline did get rather large and mannish as well--see the photo link to worldroots.

She was his daughter by his first wife Marie of Waldeck-Pyrmont (sister of Helen, Duchess of Albany and of Queen Emma of the Netherlands,1857-1882) . Pauline(1877-1965) married Furst Friedrich of Wied in 189 8. She had a brother, Christoph, who died at 5 months in 1880. Because he and his 2nd wife were childless, Pauline was his only surviving child.  Pauline was thus first cousin to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and Princess Alice of Albany (later Countess of Athlone). Alice mentions her somewhat in her autobiography (I'll have to dig it out) but there doesn't seem to have been an especial closeness.

A photo of Pauline (looking rather mannish  :-/ )
