at this point, i guess i'm just glad she left a family that may have loved her (in a way) but didn't really want her, and went to one that did.            she was a little girl, and whatever her issues may have been, she was just as fragile as any other little girl.       i'm not, at all, surprised she became as german as she did.   i would imagine that russia held very few, if any, positive associations.

at the very least, she could feel wanted & loved in Württemburg.

Vera felt that her siblings were remote. She tried to be closer to them but without success. In 1905 Vera deeply resented the fact that a newborn daughter of her brother Konstantin was named Natalia, but Vera wanted her own name for a baby. Just to make Vera easy Konstantin's next daughter got the name "Vera" (though happy parents wanted to name a baby "Marianna" in honour of GDss Elizaveta (Mavra)'s fave sister...Just imagine - Princess Marianna Konstantinovna!!!  :-\ In Russian it sounds strange and too long.)

it was said earlier that HIH Grand Duchess Vera inherited her AUnt Olga & Uncle Karl 's fortune in Wurtemburg (and she was actually legally adopted right?).. Anyone know how much?  Wouldn't a good fortuned have actually made her richer than any of her siblings?

I've just found a note why Vera got her unusual for the Romanovs name VERA. At first her parents wanted to name her Alexandra. She was born in 1854 in the edge of the Crimean War and the embittered Emperor Nicholas I, meaning the mortifying defeat of the Russian army,  said at his newborn granddaughter's christening :"Let she be my faith!". Faith aka VERA. Faith in victory of Russia.

had she been named Marianna, who would her patron saint have been?   i mean, she wouldn't have had a "Name Day", would she?

.
.

also, how old was Vera when her aunt, Olga Nikolaevna queen of Württemburg, died?   i've seen one or two fotos of a very young Vera & her aunt, but i don't think i've ever seen even one foto of the two w/ Vera as a young adult etc.

Actually there is a Name Day for "Marianna" in March, but in that case I believe her namesday would be in th same day as "Maria".

Queen Olga died in 1892, so Vera was 38 that year. I haven't seen their photos together with adult Vera. :-\

Why didn't Vera remarry?

(before I made a mistake, I thought this was the topic for the younger Vera. :X)

Why didn't Vera remarry?

GDss Vera was a sort of a woman who run to extremes in her relations to people. She was very devoted to her husband and thus did not want to remarry. Also actually there is no SO many suitable husbands for Grand Duchesses even if they were widows.

I see,Thank you Sveta dear, Politics and being a royal must be hurried at times, no human thoughts, just duty.  Poor Vera! :(

Daughters- Tools to have alliances.

Sons- Heirs for the blood line.

Sad, at times I wish I was royalty and now at other times, I’m glad am not!

I've just finished a book on King Karl I. of Württemberg, the Author did a great job and also wrote Bios of the other three Württembergian Kings and one on Wera Konstantinowa. Also a good book on Karl-Olga-Wera is the Diary of Olgas Lady-in-waiting Eveline von Massenbach.

Here are some facts:

- The Reason that Karl and Olga had no children, was the result of two Gonorrhea deseases in Karls youth which made him Infertile

- Wera was a very naughty girl when she came to Württemberg, she even kicked King Karl with her foot one time, he hit her back and Olga cried

- In 1870/71 in the Franco-German war Wera was proud and enthusiastic for the victories of the Württembergian Army

- Wera really liked Kaiser Wilhelm II. (Karl and Olga did not) and had also busts of Bismarck and von Moltke in her home

- Karl and Olga enjoyed Weras children Olga and Elsa very much.
One time Weras new dog drank the content of Elsas potty, it caused some trouble in the family and Elsa said: "I'll fill it up soon."

- Wera created the "Weraheim" a house for young pregnant and unmarried women, a scandal at that time and Wera didn't had any support by church or financial help, so she had to pay and organize all by herself. The Weraheim still exist today.

- She also was patroness of the Nikolauspflege, a institution for blind people. This is also still existing.

- After her convert to Lutherismn in 1909 Wera built the Heilandskirche (church) in Berg

- Wera was the favourite member of the Württemberg Royal Family

- Wera was very close to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law

I wonder who inherited her home in Stuttgart (Villa Berg) upon her death in 1912?

Villa Berg was passed to Stuttgart in 1913 and was used as a cultural center.

It is in the Villa Berg Park in Southeast Stuttart on Cannstatter Strausse opposite another huge park (Rosensteinpark).  You can't miss it.
