"Alexander II" by Princess Yurievskaya
« on: November 17, 2005, 02:08:08 PM »
Apparently Alexander's second wife, Princess Yurievskaya wrote a memoir about her husband! (Published in Russian)

I'm not sure how hard it's going to be to get this and how much it will cost, but there was an option to put in a request for it, so I did...

This book is readily available.

Personally I was never interested in purchasing this book. It only costs a few $'s in the US (under $10.)

Actually I have not much desire to get this book. I glanced inside... and was not impressed much. :-/

The price does not bother me, I have been hoping for a bio of Alex II for a long tine- in English !
Helen, is it worth translating ?

About six years ago, I had an original antique copy of the book written in French. I gave it as a Christmas gift to one of Alexander II's descendents. Now I wish that I had photocopied or scanned it first.

I have been looking for a book on him too, but I am not sure if there is anything good in English. When I saw this one, I thought it may be worth while, just because it is material that comes from someone who actually knew him. Even if it's not a piece of woryhy scholarship, it may be worth a look, at least to see what she had to say... just for its own sake. I did put in a request for it, so depending on what they come back with (or not come back with), I may or may not get it. I've learned not to expect too much from publications like this and just take them for what they are....

What was your opinion of the book (if you had the chance to read it)? That was nice of you to give your antique copy to one of AII's descendants, I am not sure if I would have given away my antique copy - descendants or no!  ;D
