I don't think Anne really cares about dress sense.

Agree with the fact that the dress does bring back to mind the Wales disastrous marriage, and should have been kept in the closet for that reason.

That outfit was a fright twenty-seven years ago, and it's even more of a fright now.  That hat is simply absurd plonked on top of that candy-floss barnet, quite apart from its inherent ugliness.  And the shoes, oh my god, the shoes!!!!!  Do they come with a free pair of oars?!

If we didn't know better this outfit could have come from the back of Auntie Margaret's closet, in the section labelled 'hideous fashions worn by Madge in the 90's'.

Tight is not the word.  Tasteless miserliness is really the only way to describe Anne's approach to what she wears.  And there really is no virtue in still being able to get in to clothes a quarter of a century later if the clothes did not merit donning in the first instance........

I think we can all agree that the dress is god awful ugly. I just wish I could fit into clothes I wore over 25 years ago!...-). Good for the Princess Royal for that!

Thank you, Martyn.  The result of this post has been the best work-out my diaphragm has had this week!

While I envy the fact that a dress from so long ago still fits her, what I really envy is the closet space !

Speaking of Princess Anne's closet space, does anyone know much about her home, Gatcombe Park?  How big is it?  Does she live "royally?"  Pictures?

I think Anne thinks herself totally beyond fashion.I also think she is to say the least stingy....but there is a happy medium with anything...and she wants to waken up to that fact...

I think most of you are missing the point on this particular subject.   Whether PA is stingy or that she can fit into a 27 year old dress is not the main issue on this particular story.   She managed to dredge up an outfit that she wore for one of the most ill-fated, disastrous unions in the history of the British Monarchy.   Surely she must have known that the media would latch onto this with glee thus over-shadowing what should have been a carefree day for the young couple getting married recently.

I do wonder if PA does this sort of thing deliberately - surely it can't be by chance.

That point was raised by one or two, Joan, if you look back over the thread.

Well in times of global economic downturn, at least the Princess Royal won't be accused of being extravagant!

Absolutely KILLING!  I love that!

I'm with everyone on the notion that this dress was not only 'FUGLY', as Tampa so eloquently puts it, but that its associations were unfortunate.  It does make you wonder whether Anne pays any attention to things like that......or whether she is just tight.......?

Royals have to dress for the occasion and are perhaps often open to the accusation of extravagance.  No danger of that happening to Anne.  Her house must be like some old Oxfam shop, if she still gives closet room to frocks that are a quarter of a century old..........

I think Anne's tight fist with money comes from her mother.  QEII spends on clothes because she has to look great.  It is part of her job.  Anne does not have to spend money to look fashionable because no one expects her to look fashionable.  Therefore, Anne does not spend on new clothes.

Do we think that maybe she is hard-up?

After all it must cost a packet to run that pile in Gloucestershire, not to mention maintaining her equestrian pursuits.  There was some talk recently about her being unable/unwilling to cough up for son Peter's wedding, hence the 'Hello' deal - might she just be skint?  (Why am I using this argument - we know that it doesn't cost a fortune to look well-turned out if you have the nouse to do it....she has no taste at all)

Apart from that, the Windsors are reputed to be tight as a clan in general........
