In days of much lower life expectancies, Henry I, Henry II and Edward I all reigned for 35 years and Edward III for 50 years. James I/VI was King of Scots for 35 years and King of England and Scotland for a further 22 years.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the longest-reigning monarch ever was a 6th Dynasty Egyptian Pharoah, Pepi II, whose reign of 94 years is unlikely to be surpassed. However, he was apparently a very weak ruler.

The Pepi's of Egypt  are disputed as to their reigns, Between Pepi I & Pepi II the total is 94 years. [according to Chronicle of the Pharaohs by Clayton]
But closer to home, in the European sense, I think Louis XIV takes the award at 72+ years. His successor   Louis XV  was about 59 years. Of course, both became kings at age 5.

Franz Josef reigned for 10 days short of 68 years, after succeeding at 18. His predecessor Ferdinand did not die until 1875, and Franz Josef's father not until 1878, so if the two had not stepped aside in 1848 Franz Josef would have only managed 38 years.

As of today the Queen is the second longest reigning monarch in British history, though she will have to wait until September 2005, when she will be 89, to overtake Queen Victoria.

Yet another example of Princess Anne's thrift (and the fact she has kept her figure). At the Duke of Edinburgh's 90th birthday service at St Gorge's Chapel she wore the same coat and hat she wore at Ascot in 1980.

It seems to have stood the test of time!

perhaps the best worn outfit is the blue coat and pillbox hat she has worn since the early 1980s .... it was seen at the wedding of Lord Linley (1993), The Queen Mother's 100th birthday thanksgiving service, the wedding of Charles and Camilla in 2005 and so on and so forth!

I suppose that's the great benefit of Anne not being interested in fashion...if the outfit still fits well and is in good condition, why not get more use out of it?

While I envy the fact that she has kept her figure, what I really am jealous is of her CLOSET SPACE.

Just shows she does have a knowledge for fashion.
Fancy wearing lothing 30 years later and it's still cool.

i love how thrifty anne is. i think it was terry wogan who once asked her if she was thrifty in all areas of her life, and she replied yes, probably because she had a scottish nanny.
in an interview with michael parkinson he pointed out about her wardrobe choices being criticised and how a male member of the royal family wouldn't be criticised in that way. she simply replied that women weren't supposed to be funny either. lol.
when he pointed out a particular suit she had worn recently (interview circa 1985) that the press had pointed out she had worn in like 1970 she just stared for a second and replied "its older than that" for all the wrong reasons... i love princess anne.

its a pity the press can't leave it alone when the royal family fashion-recycle, what, have kate and william been married for 6 weeks? and already i turned on the news this morning and they are having a go at her for wearing an already-worn outfit to the duke's 90th, even though she looked stunning!

I like Anne's no-nonsense approach to fashion too.  I do sometimes think she recycles the wrong stuff (like the yellow flowered dress and hat), but that coat from Ascot is wonderful!

i absolutley agree, i don't think the problem is necessarily that she fashion-recylces, its just that imo she recycles some really bad stuff, ie, the yellow floral thing, which i think was terrible in 1981, let alone today!  but again thats her approach, so if she likes it, ...
