Duke Albrecht of Bavaria
« on: November 18, 2005, 07:38:11 AM »
Can someone tell more about Duke Albrecht?

I know that his parents were CP Rupprecht of Bavaria and CP Marie Gabrielle of Bavaria and that of four siblings, only he survived; and that he was married firstly to Maria Johanna Draskovich de Trakostjan and had four children with her (twins Gabrielle and Charlotte, and two sons Franz and Max Emmanuel) and secondly to Maria Keglevich de Buzin. And that he was also the second time a widower.

But can someone tell how involved was in public life in Bavaria, what did he do (if he did) to promote his family (not to restore a monarchy...) in Bavaria, Germany?

Thanks,

Daniela

Duke Albrecht was highly respected in Bavaria, as was his father and as is his son Franz.  The Bavarian royal family continues to hold an unofficial high position within the region.

Albrecht was a forestry expert and worked in Yugoslavia for Prince Regent Paul for many years.

Like his stepmother Antonia, Albrecht and his family were placed in a concentration camp during the last years of the Nazi regime.  For more information ont his sad episode I recommend reading the memoirs of the Duchess of Croÿ, an exclusive which appeared inside Issue 46 of The European Royal History Journal in September 2005.

Princess Marie Gabrielle, née Duchess in Bavaria, has never been Crownprincess of Bavaria. In 1912, the year of Marie Gabrielle's death, Rupprecht was "only" Prince of Bavaria.

And as far as I know, his wives had nicknames: Marita and Jenke (Marie Eugenie?).

I found some nice pics of Albrecht in "Die Wittelsbacher und ihre Hunde" ("... and their dogs"). It looks like Albrecht had dogs around him for all his life. For example he had dachshunds called Uschi, Tupfi, Radi, Amsel and Bartl.
Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.
