The Czar and the Grandmaster of Chess
« on: November 21, 2005, 05:10:25 PM »
"In 1914, Nicholas II, the Czar of Russia, conferred the title ‘Grandmaster of Chess‘ on Emanuel Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Tarrasch, and Marshall after they took the top 5 places in the St. Petersburg tournament. These are the five original Grandmasters. "

There must exist a picture on this event. Would be very very very nice to see it!!

The title "Grandmaster of Chess" was first formally conferred by Russian Tsar Nicholas II, who in 1914 awarded it to five players (Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall), who were finalists of a tournament in Saint Petersburg which he had partially funded. The tournament was won by Lasker ahead of Capablanca.
