Pregnancy Photos?
« on: November 22, 2005, 07:39:31 PM »
Does anyone have any good photos of any of the Romanov women during pregnancy? I know there is a thread about A.F. during her pregnancies, and there are some great and beautiful pictures on there. But I was wondering if there are any more good ones of her, and any of Xenia, Olga A., Marie Feodorovna, etc. during their pregnancies. I know Xenia often suffered skin complaints during stressful periods, and that some of her seven pregnancies did cause her to break out in the rash, and she would never have allowed herself to be photographed then, but maybe her other pregnancies?

Other Romanov mothers are welcome, too. I'm just fascinated with all of this stuff, and pregnancy is a beautiful thing...(not that I've ever experienced it myself to know--but I think there's nothing more beautiful than an expectant mother--the glow of happiness that surrounds them...Anyone else agree?

It'll probably be difficult to find. Most women back then weren't even seen much in public when expecting. There are private photos around I'm sure given how snap-happy the Romanovs were but I don't know how much they'll surface publicly.

I agree with Ella. It's really difficult to find...I even can't remember a photo of a pregnant Romanov woman, except Empress Alexandra  ???.

Whoops, I've just recalled a photo of the Empress Maria Alexandrovna... where she looks fatter than usual! Hmmm. I wish I recalled which of my books contained this photo... :-/

There's a photograph of Natalia Brasova heavily pregnant in the book "Michael and Natasha", maybe someone can post it here. She looks very beautiful in it =)

Thank you all for your input. I realize how difficult a task it is to find those pictures because of the exact reasons you said, but I know that private photos must exist somewhere--it's just a matter of them surfacing. The picture in Michael and Natasha would be interesting to see--I think I might recall having seen it....But anyway, thank you all, and hopefully something will turn up eventually. ;)

At last! I've hunted out a photo of Maria Alexandrovna I mentioned.  :D

Here the Impress Maria Alexandrovna in 1860 and she is definitely pregnant (with Pavel).

Thanks for posting that picture. She does look pregnant, because if she wasn't, her waist would be lower and would be tightly squeezed into a corset! It's a great picture, and very interesting, although I'll admit, I don't know that much about her.

I've seen that thread, and that's what inspired me to make a thread in here to ask about other pregnant royals then. I agree that Alix looks exquisite pregnant--with that glow of joy and anticipation for the birth of a special little child... :) *sigh* Almost makes me want to go out and get pregnant--almost, but not quite...LOL

I have always liked that photo of Natasha ever since I saw it. She was pregnant with George, Count Brassov who was born 1910, died 1931, too young in a auto accident. This was Grand Duke Michael's only child. She had another child by a earlier marriage, a daughter. Natasha looks lovely here, although times were not happy for her then. Yes, there does seem to be something special about expectant mothers. But there are not that many photos from back then, which is sad. I have enjoyed seeing these pictures, although I cannot recall any myself that I could post.

This would have been considered the "Victorian" period would it not? From what I understand women didn't even talk about pregnancy (let alone let the photo be taken) unless they were in a group of only women.

Edwardian, actually -- Victoria died in 1901. ;)
