I think that would be impossible because D. Miguel and all his descendants were exiled FOREVER from Portugal and forbidden to step foot on Portugal.

Not only D.Miguel was banned for good and sent to exile, but a law was passed according to which should he or any descendant set foot on Portugal, anybody could shoot them  :o .

Despite he never had the law abolished, D.Pedro V helped financially his great-uncle  :-X .
There are rumours that D.Miguel once visited the king in the discrete Palácio de Mafra, some 50km away from Lisbon.

D.Miguel (II) also visited Lisbon, accompanied by his sister Infanta D.Aldegundes and his brother-in-law the ount of Bardi.
They were recognized in a theater and they had to leave hastly to Bardi's ship Adelgonda who was anchored in the Tagus.

Hello  :)

There could not be any miscarriage from Pedro and Stephanie's marriage...she died still a virgin (comproved by autopsy)... :-[

Pedro had no incapacities (confirmed by autopsy)...Probably they were waiting for the right time...

Waiting for the right time is an odd thing for a royal couple, isn't it?

Yes I believe it's odd...I don't know why that happened, but I believe Pedro was very introspective and serious...Alexandre Herculano, a great man of the Portuguese culture and a close friend to the King, once said the King was 'an old man of 60 years' (NOTE: I can´t remember the precise age he attributed to him, but it was near 60 I believe)...

But I wonder if Stephanie's autopsy was well done... ???

PL, remember that we are talking about the XIX century, during the Romantism times and the Victorian age, when sex was tabu.

And they were married just for 1 year and 2 months, until Estefânia died! It's enough time to have sex, but if you think they were totally strangers to each other before the marriage, you may think it is little time to know very well any person.

Usually, 2 persons met, become friends, know each other, become in love, begin dating, get engaged and then marry. With Pedro and Estefânia they first marry and then began to know each other. I think Estefânia and Pedro were still very young and innocent, they were already married but behaved like boyfriends, not man and wife, so no sex until the right time.

This is only my personal opinion.

I totally agree with you... ;)

And the fact that they didn't consummate the marriage does not make of them some freaks...in fact it makes their history even more charming and romantic  ::)...

Yes, you're perfectly right. How old were they when they married? That could have been a factor too, of course.

But I have to say that just because sex was a taboo in Victorian times doesn't mean people didn't have it. Look at Victoria's words when told not to have more children aged 38.  ;D ;D

Did he even consider re-marrying after Estefânia's death?

After Estefania's death, King Fernando considered asking for Princess Maria Pia of Italy's hand as a second wife for his son King Pedro. The untimely death of the latter put an end to this scheme. Maria Pia was therefore married to Pedro's younger brother and successor King Luiz.

BTW, this is probably a silly question, but Stephanie is quite an odd name for a royal - why was she named thus?

Very interesting indeed...but Pedro would have had to wait a few more years to marry Maria Pia...she was very young...and I think Luis quickly married her on the urgent need of producing more heirs to the throne...

I believe that in Italy there was a great joy when she married Luis...

Stephanie was named in honour of her grand-mama, Dowager Grand Duchess Stephanie of Baden, née de Beauharnais, cr Princesse française when she was adopted by Napoleon...

I'm not sure the doctor said "Estefânia is virgin". It seems that he just gave his opinion, saying that the Queen should be buried in a white coffin with orange flowers (like it is done to virgins). See this Portuguese link: http://www.portugal-linha.pt/opiniao/MDias/md1.html - 13º paragraph.

One thing is a scientific, objective and observable fact ("she is virgin"), another thing is to give a personal and subjective opinion.

Sexual activity would usually puncture the hymen but remember that some women have intact hymens after the sexual intercourse. Is Estefânia's case? Who knows?

Because Vittorio Emanuele had conquered some territories from the Pope the Savoy weren't on their best time...and though today one might not give much importance to the Braganças, they had as a dynasty an enormous prestige in Europe...

And someone women break the hymen without ever having sex.  ;)

You and Bernardino know much more than me about this, but at 21 when they were married, it seems pretty unlikely they didn't have sex, IMO.

I think that in those days, and especially in some social stratus, the idea of sex wasn´t so precocious as today  ;D...
