Younger sons of James III
« on: November 26, 2005, 06:03:21 AM »
Hi everyone. As well as the future James IV, James III and Margaret of Denmark had two younger sons, James Stewart, Duke of Ross (1476-1504) and John Stewart, Earl of Mar (1480-1503).

I'd like to know more of these two. Why did they never marry? Did they have any impact on Scottish politics? Where they loyal supporters of their brother and, later, nephew? Anyone know anything at all about them?

I don't know much about these two either. They don't appear to have been troublemakers, like James III's brothers.

They died before their brother, so weren't around for James V.

Was one of them a cleric or something?

Yes, the Duke of Ross was Archbishop of St Andrews and primate of Scotland! After his death James IV arranged for his own sixteen year old (illegitimate) son Alexander Stewart to be Archbishop instead.

John Macdonald was stripped of the Earldom of Ross, which was then annexed to the crown and bestowed upon James' 2nd son.

imagine margaret and her servants: 'please call james for me, will you?' 'will that be your husband, your older or your younger son, madame?'

tsk tsk, what a lack of imagination...   ::)

Well, I'm sure Margaret would have said 'Tell the King my husband I would see him' etc.  ;D But it's nice to think of the family of James, Meg, Jimmy, Jamie and Johnny.  ;D ;D
