Petruska, I am eagerly awaiting your pictures.

Gelglov had been posting pictures of the excavations so we knew they were going on, but no one has said anything about them.  I really wonder WHO it is that is doing it and what will be done with the bodies.  (No  matter what the Germans did they deserve our respect)

I am sad that there doesn't seem to be any new work done on the AP.  But really glad for the update.  Thank you.

The very day we were there they were excavating the little flower bed in front of the AP.

Interesting, I guess they finally decided to repatriate these graves. They should have done this long ago, but I guess it took lots of time and lots of red tape. BTW, I don't think they were SS, just some German military regiment, I believe. I would like to see the photos, thanks.

Hi again - I've put about half the pics up!  Including the one's of the digging.  It definately is an SS cemetary as I mentioned previously I saw with my own eyes the dog tags removed from the graves and they were in pretty good condition and clearly legible.  The 'digger' I spoke to was Russian and kept repeating "SS Militia" so I assume, as others have mentioned, that the graves are those of SS Field Police (MP's).

Anyway you can access the photos at:

My username - Petrushka3
My password - nigeljemson

You need to look in the St Petersburg 07 file.

Unfortunately it was rather overcast during our visit so the pics aren't quite as bright as those of two years ago - hence so many black and whites.

Hope you find them interesting and please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Be good

Most likely it in the basic cemetery of 4-th Police division, then she became ÑÑ, then the Tank - grenadierial (already in Russia) and ó÷àâñòâîâàëà in an attack to France (basically stood in a reserve). Under plans of an attack for the USSR stood all over again too in a reserve, but then together with 269 infantry division entered in 50 (L) the army case of Germans of group of army "North." Was together with 269 i.d. The participant of fights in near Luga also took its storm. Then together with 269 i.d. Participated in storm of Gatchina (Krasnogvardeysk), but city has taken 269 i.d. And at last together with the same 269 ï.ä. And a combined team tank group stormed also city Pushkin. Basically it is tombs should be this division ÑÑ and 269 i.d., though to ÑÑ and Gestapo they have very remote relationship. Though they and participated in fights with guerrillas and local residents than and this division and " has become famous as chastisers " on East front. Then she still long wared on the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts. Can they and to bury till 1944 about a palace. In 1944 it has well got at the beginning of approach with Oranienbaumskogo "pytochka".

Hi Petrushka,

When were you at the AP this time?  I was there October 21st for my first time.  I am not quite as eloquent at describing my visit as you have been with yours, but, suffice it to say, that we have had simliar experiences.  This is my first post, and I find it very interesting that I, too, went to the Petrovskaya Embankment (where the Chinese lions are) to take pictures of where A walked down the stairs with OTMA.  That, I agree, is the real connection with them.  Curious--What other places in Petersburg did you enjoy most?

Hi POMAHOB2,

We were there for a week from the 23rd of October - the same week in 2005.  It was a little disapointing that there was no snow this year but still fantastic to be there.  As you said, I enjoyed just going around the places that I know of from all my Romanov books and in a strange way it's an easy city to navigate simply from reading Romanov literature.  The Embankment was a real find as we just stumbled across it.  I personally, appreciating it sounds a little sad, really got a buzz/connection from being in certain places - the White Dining Room in the Winter Palace was special.  You can so easily picture the IF enjoying a relatively informal meal in its intimate (for the WP) surroundings - and it appears to have survived so completely intact.  Obviously the SS Peter & Paul, specifically the Cathedral, although it would be great to see it without so many school groups/tourist groups etc.  As with everything its sometimes difficult not to be selfish with what I'd really like, when the money gained for preservationa nd restoration is so vital.

I'm not a huge fan of all the restoration personally, I'd rather enjoy an atmospheric ruin than a mock-up.  The grounds of the Alexander Park are by far the best part of any trip from my perspective.  The Sobor, Gorodok, the little lake, the children's island etc just blow me away, I could happily sit there for hours (my poor fiance allowing).  This year we spent a whole day just walking around the Alexander and Catherine Parks and thought it was brilliant.  Obviously the Alexander Palace itself - although it makes me sad to think about how badly the place has been damaged.  As I've said previously it's more about being there in the same 'space' rather than being in a replica - I'd be happy walking through the AP if it was totally empty, but equally I understand the need to provide something readily 'consumable' for tourists not as passionate about the IF specifically.  I think that if the palace is completely restored it will be far less attractive to the sort of people who frequent this site - people who want the connection not the theme park experience (obviously that's only my opinion). Also if it is fully restored, the current joy of it always being quiet and uncrowded will doubtless come to an end!

All in all, I just adore being in St Petersburg - this year I started thinking that it was ironic the IF have always been quoted as saying they hated the city, or certainly the general malaise of its court circles, and yet it's now the place synonomous with them and provides the best link to the world they knew.

Sorry to waffle and thanks for your message - if you can, get some photos from your trip up!

I'm really bad at figuring anything out about posting pictures.  I have the card from the digital camera, but any help on how would be great--I would love to share my pics!

Petrushka3, I have a couple of questions:  how close can you walk towards the semicircle balcony, are the two paths that lead to the bridges accessible; and in you photoalbum from I think, 2005, you have a picture of the side of the palace, is this the Nicholas II family side, or the side that is occupied by the navy?  Also, (sorry, more than a couple of questions)  where do you live that you travel so frequently to the Alexander Palace, if you don't mind answering.  Thanks

Pomahob2,

There is a thread in the General section about posting photos:

http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php/topic,771.0.html

Basically, you need to upload your pictures to some photo site (Photobucket seems like a common one). Then you post links to them using the Hyperlink tool in the post reply function of the forum.

It's pretty easy once you've done it and we all would love to see your photos.
