Fall of Eagles on DVD
« on: July 29, 2004, 04:14:26 AM »
The excellent 13-part BBC series Fall of Eagles is due to be released by UK company DD Video on both DVD and Video later this Autumn. The drama centres around the fall of Europe's great dynasties but pays most attention to the story of Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra who are strongly and faithfully played by Charles Kay and Gayle Hunnicutt.

This dramatisation of the Romanov story begins with Nicholas' accession and ends with his abdication.

The cast also includes Patrick Stewart as Lenin, Jan Francis as Kschessinska, Charles Gray as Rodzianko and Michael Aldridge as Rasputin.

The DVD also includes a 40-page full-colour historical companion booklet and exclusive new interviews with both Charles and Gayle, during which they explain how they felt about taking on the roles of the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia.

The DVD boxset which will retail for around £39.99 (sterling) is a region 2 release and will be available from online retailers throughout Europe. If you live outside Europe, you will need a multi-region player to view the DVD. In the UK the boxset will also be available in high street stores including HMV and Virgin.

I liked the Hohenzollern and Hapsburg parts but I was not at all happy with the way they portrayed Alexandra, or even Nicholas.

I've herd good things about this movie, but, alas, it doesn't look like it'll be released in Region 1 formatting. :(

This is the greatest news !!! I can't recall how many times I have written to BBC regarding this series, never an answer.
I have the original series on tape, from  what 25 [?] years ago & have even asked permission to have them copied .
My dvd player plays any region, so I do not care WHAT region it is in,  I will order it as soon as I see it !!
Cheers,
Robert

I wonder if there is a way of those here in Region 1 could petition to have this released here. I have a copy that a friend made for me when Bravo in it's early days ran the series.

Maybe find out who the company in UK is and contact them.

Also I am curious that The Mystery of Anna and Rasputin with Alan Rickman have never been released on DVD but they were in the UK

Hopefully it will be only a matter of time before Fall of Eagles and Rasputin are out on DVD in region 1.

You can forget a petition. They will not release it in region 1 until they are convince there is abig enough market for it.
My simple advice: get an all region dvd player. They are available on the internet for around $300 now, icl. shipping. There are no special connections, same as a regular one. Consider that the dvds are going to cost at least around $100, 13 episodes, same as I CLAUDIUS I would think. It  would make the investment worthwhile and you are ready for the next thing to come out-region 2 only.
Also, see if it is available in Canada, they are region 1 but have a different distribution arrangement & ofetn have a lot of BBC shows not available here, like the Prince John series a while back.
Anyway, my copy will be waiting for me when I arrive in England this winter- my friends know me very well indeed, didn't even have to drop a hint  ;)

According to the HMV music store website, "Fall of Eagles" will be released on DVD on the 8th November, so only a week or two more to wait !
It will cost approx £45 for the whole series.
I will almost certainly purchase it, but I would like to
know how others rate it regarding historical accuracy etc  as I have not seen it ... also, as it was made in the early 70's, will it have badly dated, like many other "period" drama's from that time ?

Thanks

Greg

I still have the series on tape but have already ordered the dvd [Amazon. uk is a bit cheaper, free delivery in the UK].
Personally, I think it is very good on accuracy, but there will be those who dislike the Romanov portrayals. Nothing seems to ever satisfy some people !
It is about ALL 3 dynasties, and my favourite is the Austrian sequences by far.
Cheers,
Robert
