We've already been told that we can't use 'Stavros', so it would be a shame to lose 'Cookie' as well - both have brought us considerable amusement in the past.

Really!!! I must have been shopping and missed the "No Stavros" announcement from the FA.

It is enough to make a person leave work early and head to the Pub or a great shoe store!

Too right......I headed straight for Harvey Nichols!!

Still it was a while ago - maybe we can have 'Stavros' back again??

A little off-topic but sort of related.  ITV1 at the moment is running a series called 'Headcases', a sort of substandard CGI Spitting Image-esque programme, which every week features Mohammed Al Fayed's 'Conspiracy Theories'.  Last week he was proposing that Cookie was in fact bumped off by none other than, yes you've guessed it, 'Prance Phallip' (his pronunciation...) Absolutely killing........Every week he has a different theory for accidents and disasters, such as the sinking of the Titanic, the demise of the dinosaurs; every week his answer to the mystery is the same (Prince Philip).  I just roar with laughter.......

Not if you understand Mohammed Al Fayed's mentality.  He can't really accept the truth.  This is strange considering he has witheld a lot of truth about his own past.

Why don't we have a contest ( :) ) on whoever comes up with the best and most fitting nickname  * not too offensive *  for the former Queen Mum

Now, who would like to go first ?  :D

"Archduchess:"   You need to read carefully your post (#274) and consider your motive/s for this rather odd idea and the need for such.  In my considered opinion, by qualifying your so-called contest proposal with the phrase " not too offensive," you are knowing or unknowingly, inviting and/or sanctioning potential derision of this well-respected lady.   It is not an idea worthy of a true archduchess.   AP

The only reason I wrote that is because there are some members who believe that I am being too shallow by posting only  POSITIVE things about past/present royals !  :(

But, I'll change it to what I originally had which was * NON-Offensive *  :)

I propose 'Cookie'.

It's been used on this board since I was nothing but a wee lurker.

Those who consider it offensive need not use it.

What on Earth?  I thought American TV was generally utter crap, but this takes the cake.  He bumped off his mother-in-law at the age of 101?  Pray tell, did Al Fayed have a theory as to why he waited so long? LMAO

It's a satire. It doesn't have to actually prove its theoriies.  Basically a reaction to Mo spouting unfounded allegations about the
Royal family.  I haven't seen it but it sounds clever.  A bit like Monty Python.  It may actually quiet Mo down a bit.

Personally I always thought "Cookie" rather unpleasant.  I think it is possible to admire both Wallis and the late QM - very different women and certainly different characters.

I think the accepted view of "Wallis" by the Royal Family as a "common adventuress" was largely used because they couldn't quite bring themselves to place blame where it really lay which was with the Duke of Windsor.  She was also a very convenient excuse as to how his behaviour and attitudes developed during the run up to the death of his father and beyond - personally i doubt she changed his personality all that much.

Actually quite a few of the Queen Mother's comments on Wallis and David have survived -  "the lowest of the low", "he used to be so kind to us" etc-  they are perhaps not as widely known.  Personally of all The Duke and Duchess of Windsor's "bon mots" about his family my personal favourite is Mr and Mrs Temple Sr (parents of the child star - which was what Princess Elizabeth was in the 30's) - its a little less cutting than "Cookie" which given that the Queen Mother was quite concious of her "plumpness" in the thirties was designed to be hurtful.

On a personal note i think family nicknames are fine to use - i think that nicknames that were originally intended to wound aren't really that appropriate for anyone to use.

Considering Edward's n'ckname for Wallis was Wally (which you can either interpret as a male name or in the British sense as a clumsy and naive idiot)  I don't thnk she should have been assigning names to anyone.

They both behaved very badly at the time ... but I would like to propose the dear and most commonly used nickname for her late majesty which is the Queen Mum :)

It is clever and it might shut him up, one can only hope.......

Headcases also features  a 'Whacky Races' inspired running feature with Pce Philip as a Dick Dastardly type character who tries everything to foil Kate Middleton (Kate Middleclass as he likes to call her) in her attempts to be a worthy and popular royal.....most amusing.......the sketch usually ends with Pce Philip exposed as a villain in public wearing nothing but his pants!

Cookie will do for me, thanks.......
