One morsel claimed that she would have a couple of gin and Dubonnets before luncheon.  Just for kicks, I decided to fix myself one of these drinks just to see what it is like (HM The Queen also drinks these) - 1/3 gin and 2/3 Dubonnet, a slice of lemon (not a wedge), and two ice cubes.  Let me tell you, these things are not for the faint of heart!  When entertaining a house party at the weekend, QEQM would have a tray of martinis brought up to drink while she dresssed for dinner, and would usually have a half-bottle of champagne with dinner.

I had to laugh when I read this - it reminded me of my own late grandmother.  I don't believe I ever saw her without a drink in her hand (well-aged Kentucky bourbon with a splash of water was her preferred tipple), although I also never saw her even remotely affected.  After her funeral last autumn, all 20 of her grandchildren ordered one of Gran's drinks to toast great lady one final time, and none of us could finish our glass!

It must have been the era!

lol...
I have never had bourbon - but am sorely tempted now!

One more thing, QEQM referred to her potent potables not as 'cocktails' (too American), but as 'drinkie-poos'; I would probably call them 'knee-bucklers'.  ; o

It must have been so much fun being one of Cookie's guests. She certainly knew how to enjoy herself and everyone, be them detractor or idol worshipper says/said what a good sport she was socially.

The dynamics of her relationship with the present Queen must have been fascinating. I mean being such a sybaritic (my favourite word at the moment to describe all thing Cookie related) Cookie must have raised her eye brows at what she had produced when Lilibet went around turning lights after her etc!(If I hasten to point out, that that anecdote be true!!!)

Few of us alas shall be alive to drool over their private papers....ho hum! Just think what goodies biographers of the future shall unearth from Cookie's papers in the RA!

And whilst this woman was swigging her gins &dubonnet, the rest of us were grappling with post-war Britian.  Marie Antionette indeed !!!!
