Given the problems she and the besotted Duke of Windsor caused for the British monarchy, it is hardly surprising that there are negative views of Mrs Simpson.

Am off to see the picture later this week - but to many in the thirties the Duchess of Windsor was indeed regarded as a charming and witty woman - just one of many reasons that the Duke fell so hard for her. However to others particularly many of the Duke's family she was regarded as hard. Given the film is principally about George VI I am hardly surprised if she is portrayed without much sympathy.
She had been largely blackened in the British publics eyes over the year - largely unfairly - because of two reasons 1) the Royal Family simply couldn't bear to blame Edward VIII for his behaviour during and after the abdication blaming it all on his wife suited them and 2) many of the establishment who had happily entertained her as the King's 'friend' shall we say were exceptionally quick to attack her after the abdication in order to curry favour with the new regime.
In recent years many of the documents about her held by the British Government have been released and don't show her in a particularly favourable light whether you believe them to be accurate or invention designed to put the King off although it is likely he was never shown them.
Personally i think much of the difficulties lay at the Duke's door and i think it is all credit to her that she stuck with him for the remainder of his life.

I think that she "stuck with him" because she had no where else to go.  Where does the woman who almost brought down a government and who did bring down a Duke and King go, if she leaves the man?

Even if she decided that she hated David after a few years, I don't think that divorce (yet again) would have been an option.  Divorce was what got her into trouble in the first place.  Not one but two!  And remember the time period that we are dealing with.  In the 1930s divorce was not seen as "good behavior" or as moral.  Much different from today.

To go for a third from the man who loved her so much that he let down his country his government and his family for her would have been just too much!

The person whom I always thought the most interesting in all of this was Queen Mary.  She had helped to speed up her husband's death and expected her son to follow suitably along and take up the reins (or reigns).  But he didn't!  Can you imagine what Queen Mary must have gone through?

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I hope to find a theater around here that is showing it.  I was surprised to find it on the awards list.  It doesn't fit the usual best movies genre.

Saw this film two days ago and enjoyed it immensely.

It certainly does deserve an award or two. Colin Firth presented an outstanding and IMO most credible performance.

Haven't seen the film yet, but plan to (it's not out in the UK until Friday).

To judge from photographs, Geoffrey Rush is quite a good likeness for Lionel Logue.

Here are the two current pics of Firth and Rush, plus a photo of Logue. I think it is Firth who has a stricking resemblance to Logue.

I think they were still Duke & Duchess of York at the time photo taken.

Not sure if there is already a thread discussing this movie.

Last week I saw The King's Speech and I rather enjoyed it.   I was kind of hesitant with casting choices however after the movie I was pleasently surprised.

I knew Bertie had a speech problem as shown in the movie "Bertie and Elizabeth" although in that movie his speech problem didn't seem that "bad".

So it was very fascinating to see Bertie going through threapy to help his speech.
