Actually, suicide was a crime in the UK up until about 1956/1958.

;D ;D (one of our many flawed laws) ::)
In days of yore, suicides were buried in unconsecrated ground so I guess that was "punishment" enough

I don't think she killed herself, although it is possible, people did then despite the consequences and all. I am not so sure it was murder either, though there were some who had motives. Also, it is rather too well planned to have been an accident- so who knows?

Well, I am honestly not sure, but, I do think it was more likely suicide or accident than anything else.

Yes, and I love to debate this- it is so interesting. Although, even if she hadn't been murdered, I wonder if Elizabeth would have married the Earl of Leicester. I don't she would have, although Amy Robsart Dudley made the sitiuation ( and potential marriage) more politically fraught with complications.

She probably didn't want to marry him because it would create too many enemies and it was a good political move for Elizabeth to remain single so she could arouse allies and suitors and get lots of pretty gifts  ;D

that too but i think the most important point was the loss of independence. even if she liked him (or loved him) more than her other suitors, i still don't think she would have liked not being able to flirt with everyone, losing the liberty that an unmarried woman has. i remember reading somewhere that even at the height of her infatuation with essex she was still (mind you, she was almost 70) flirting with other young men, the most proeminent of which was (if i remember correctly) sir walter ralleigh!

she enjoyed it very much and i don't think she wanted to lose that.

yes, and it would have been hard politcally to marry him even before this happened. She never wanted to be a clone of her sister, with her unpopular, foreign husband that nobody liked. That would only damage her reputation, as it had damaged her sister's. She never wanted to be less than a astute ruler, and that took prececdence over her own, personal feelings.

Can you elaborate a little? ;) As Hercule Poirot often points out, any suspect must have 'motve, means and opportunity'. As Queen, Elizabeth had means and opportunity, but what about motive? She had nothing to gain by Amy's death, except that Robert would be single again - but as she didn't marry him after Amy was dead, it doesn't seem like she had anything to do with it.

Sorry, I meant to say it was a possibility  :) I think accident would be most likely but I don't think she commited suicide.
