Daughters of Maximilian I of Bavaria

He had several daughters, Sophie and Ludovika in particular who are well known and were interesting women. I would like to know more about his other daughters in particular Auguste, who married Napoleon's stepson, Elisabeth, Queen of Prussia, and Amalie, Queen of Saxony.

Hello...

Pss Elisabeth of Bavaria was one of the last Catholic royals to change her religion...After some years of marrige to the Prussian King she became Evangelic in 1830 (I believe I'm correct about the date, but I'll check it...though I'm almost sure)...The source was Almanach de Gotha...

There are many portraits of the beautiful Bavarian Princesses :)

Elisabeth, Queen of Prussia, nicknamed Elise

Elisabeth and her sisters were tutored by Friedrich Thiersch, an archaeologist and former theologian.  He taught them literature, history and geography.  She had a wonderful childhood with her sisters in Nymphenburg and Tegernsee.

The marriage between Elisabeth and Friedrich Wilhelm IV was a love match.  They met in Baden-Baden where her family was visiting its health spa.  It is very clear why FWIV fell for Elisabeth, who was very beautiful with wonderful eyes.  However, Elisabeth did not want to convert for the sake of marriage.  She wanted to be committed and so it took her 4 years before she converted and married.

Elisabeth was said to be very political influential.

"After the revolution of March 1848 her husband, king Friedrich Wilhelm IV, never really recovered, and she became his closest advisor. After he suffered several strokes, she arranged that her brother-in-law, Prince Wilhelm, became regent. He was a liberal and reformist polititian and the party around General Leopold von Gerlach got the idea to name the Queen regent, but she refused. They had no children and when her husband died in 1861, Wilhelm became king. She spend the rest of her life traveling through Europe, and lived (1801-73)."   From www.guide2womenleaders.com

Karoline Auguste, Empress of Austria.

She married twice, first to King of Wurttemburg and then Francis I of Austria.  Napoleon considered her before marrying Marie Louise but didn't find her attractive enough.

August Amelie, Duchess of Leuchtenburg

She was often praised as being loyal to her husband even after the fall of Napoleon.

Originally, she was engaged to the Prince of Baden (who later married Stephanie Beauharnais) but Napoleon forced the families to break it off so his wife's niece could marry the Prince of Baden and his stepson could marry Auguste.  When Napoleon met Max I of Bavaria to discuss the marriage arrangements, Max thought Napoleon wanted to marry Auguste and so, had her vieled to hide her pretty face.   The marriage between Eugene and Auguste ended up to be a happy one.

The daughters of Max married the Kings of Prussia & Saxony and Emperor of Austria.  They helped to keep the relations between these three rising states smooth.

The cenotaph pf Princess Maximiliane Caroline ("Ni") of Bavaria, the youngest daughter of King Max I.

(the inscription: Much loved and dearly mourned by parents and sibblings)

She was the favourite daughter of her mother, who would never be able to overcome her death in 1821. The princess got ill in early 1821 after a theatrical performance and died soonly after.

The mother to these daughters was quite interesting herself. She was an opponent to Naopleon, but yet the Emperor sought her out and charm her with his manners and lovely French porceline... ;)
