The daughters of Max married the Kings of Prussia & Saxony and Emperor of Austria.  They helped to keep the relations between these three rising states smooth.

In 1849 a revolution broke out in Saxony, forcing Frederick Augustus II (Marie Anne's husband) to flee to Konigstein fortress.   The May Uprising was crushed by Saxon and Prussian troops and Frederick was able to return after only a few days.  This clearly shows the close relationships between the two states and I am pretty sure the sisters played a great part in helping to crush the rebels.

The sisters were always close, and later Bismark complained about the family politics of "the Wittelsbach aunts".

Yes...That is good. Since one is married to a younger man and had a lot of children, while to other married a widower  and had no children. Glad no jealousy arosed like Empress Caroline Augusta and Archduchess Sophie.

This woman is actually Amalie or her twin sister Elisabeth of Prussia.

Thanks for the Portraits of Archduchess Sophie.  ;)

No after Franz Josef became Emperor, Archduchess Sophie forbid her son to allow her half-sister, Empress Caroline Augusta (who settled in Salzburg) to come to Vienna often, since she does not want to be constantly reminded that although she was the mother of the Emperor, she was "only" an Archduchess in rank. That created ill-feelings since Empress Caroline Augusta missed her stepchildren very much anfd hoped to stay in touch.  :(

Thanks for all the portraits, there are many more than I would have thought at first!

In a Sissi bio, written by a Spanish author and recently published, it says that Ludovika was a real matchmaker; this is reinforced by another writer in his bio of Ludwig II and by the fact that out of her daughters, one became Empress, one Queen, one Duchess and one Countess, not to mention the fact that Sophie Charlotte almost became Queen while her engagement to her cousin Ludwig of Bavaria lasted. I'd like to know if Ludovika's mother, Karoline Friedricke Wilhelmine was a devoted matchmaker too? If her daughters became Queens, Archduchess, etc, I'm inclined to think she was a matchmaker too... What was the exact illness that led Maximiliane (1810-1821) to the grave? And does anyone know why the eldest son (of Maximilian I's and Karoline) died so young? I mena which exatc illness. What was the relationship between the sisters? I find it amusing that there were twos ets of twins :)

I know it is hard to believe but it is signed F. Winterhalter at the bottom.  (Sorry I don't have a bigger copy right now where you can see the signature more clearly.  It was auctionned off at Christies a few months ago.)

Ludovica was an ambitious mother.  The fact that one of her daughters (sisi) became Empress made it easier for her to marry off her other daughters.

Although Ludovica's mother (and/or father) was a great matchmaker, Ludovica unfortunately made an unillustrious marriage.

I think there is an element of planning in her daughter's marriages, but I think Sophie Charlotte's is more of a love match. The matchmaker there was Empress Caroline Augusta and Princess Clementine of Coburg. ;D

Princess Clémentine? I thought of Ludovica's sister Maria Anna of Saxony and of Caroline Auguste, of course.

Here is a coloured portrait of Queen Marie of Saxony ...
