The Sixth Sense was to me not so much horror, but utter and complete and mesmerizing intrigue! great film!

What about romance films? Anyone for Breakfast at Tiffany's?

Great one! Liz was at her best; I think she made a fast downfall.

and then there was "Wuthering Heights".

Olivier was the best Heathcliff!

Tipping our hats to this site: Dr. Zhivago? (Personally I didn't care for it)

I LOVE the 60's Dr. Zhivago, do not like the recent PBS remake. The old one was the last of the sweeping epic drama in cinema and a good view of Russian history set to a tragic love story. I like that it was written by a man who actually lived there in those times. I dislike the remake because it changed some of the things I liked best about the original, especially the ending.

Jack Kerouac?

Yes, I love William Somerset Maugham!

What about Chingiz Aitmatov? (Seeing as I have just mentioned him in another thread).

No need to feel embarrassed Herr Kaiser, as I suspect he is not all that well known. However, you should check out his biography on the Internet, as he had quite an interesting life. I think he is still alive, although he must be over 80 by now.

Making a quantum leap from east to west: How about another of my favourite authors, John McGahern?
