Ah Thijs,we"ll wait, surely you're searching, and crawling on all fours all over the attick to fetch that portrait now...

This thread,as several others you've graced with images, has turned into a sort of "On-Line National Picture Gallery" of the History of our Kingdom."Polishing-up"the image and lesser knowledge of the House of Orange in the process, just wonderfull!

Thanks Lucien. I like the idea you mentioned of a kind of "on line gallery" allthough I intentionally didn`t realize doing that. You are right by the way, the history of Dutch royalty seems somehow forgotten and it is for me a challenge to bring up some memories I guess, hoping that others will join and add. There is so much knowledge and expertise on this board that amazes me. I like the idea that from a joined interest, people share their knowledge and pictures and so on. Great!!

Princess Alexandrine, Pss of Prussia (Berlin 1 Feb 1842-Schloß Marly 25 Mar 1906, one of the daughters of princess Marianne married 1865 to Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus (Ludwigslust 5 Mar 1827-Heidelberg 28 Jul 1879. They had one child: princess Friederike Wilhelmine Elisabeth Alexandrine Auguste Marianne Charlotte (Schloß Bellevue 7 Nov 1868-Partenkirchen 20 Dec 1944) m.1st Schwerin 17 Nov 1886 Heinrich XVIII Pr Reuss (Leipzig 14 May 1847-Schweinfurt 15 Aug 1911); m.2d Berlin 4 Feb 1921 Robert Schmidt (Wilmersdorf 1 Nov 1892-Bamberg 26 Dec 1971).

Kaiserin Friedrich mentions princess Alexandrine (nicknamed Maddy) in her letters to queen Victoria. Kaiserin Friedrich was very fnd of Maddy and would have liked her to marry one of her British relatives. She writes "if Maddy would marry, she would immediately receive 1 million guilders from her mother". Marianne herself was, as far as I know, never mentioned in the letters to queen Victoria.

Princess Marianne was buried at the Friedhof in Erbach, right across the street of her schloss Reinhartshausen and besides the church she had build in which her son, Johannes van Rossum, was buried. When in 1961 her greatgranddaughter princess Elisabeth of Prussia died, she wanted to be buried in the grave of princess Marianne. When the grave was opened two coffins were discovered: one of Maarten van Rossem, princess Marianne`s longtime lover and of princess Marianne herself.

Picture of princess Marianne lying in state at schloss Reinhartshausen.

Her grave in Reinhartshausn. It seems strange to me  that she was still mentioned as princess of Prussia allthough she was divorced more than decades before she died.

By the time princess Marianne had enough of the escapades of her husband, prince Albrecht of Prussia, she divorced him. Her brother in law, Friedrich Wilhelm lV king of Prussia, decided to abandon princess Marianne from all Prussian soil.

This painting from 1852 is still hanging in Schloss Reinhartshausen and shows princess Marianne at her Italian Villa at Como Lake, Northern Italy. Also shown are princess Marianne`s daughter Charlotte and her husband Georg ll of Sachsen Meiningen.
