There were many recordings made.  We know the Dowager Empress was given a set of wax recordings of the entire family - they were at the Anitchov Palace before the revolution.

We know the Edison people came twice to record the Tsar.  We also know there were recordings of his speeches that the Grand Duchesses listened to.

Finally there is the well-known recording of his voice addressing the troops that survives.  We're going to put it up soon.

Thank you, Bob - a fascinating list. I'd very much like to hear these recordings.

Best wishes,

That´s  an amazing( if not incredible) discovery.

Hello all,
I think listening to the voice recordings would be fascinating and a wonderful addition to the site. But i was wondering if anyone knows of any video recordings of the family?
I watched 'Russia land of the Tsars' on the History channel awhile back and it had video of the family on board the Standart I think.I think video of the family would be interesting to see.

There is a new Russian CD available on the international market which provides 12  tracks some of which are Orthodox hymns sung by Zhana Bichevskaya.

The final track contains Nicholas II voice.

The CD is called  simply Tsar' Nikolai

Its a very sad and profound experience believe me. However it is only the voice of Nikolai vtoroi and not any of his family which is heard.

I hope that you will be able to acquire your own copy as well.

Despite the claim in the title of this being H.I.M. Nicholas II, it does not appear to be correct.  This is the voice of the commanding general calling for a tribute to "His Imperial Majesty Nicholas Alexandrovitch".

With Respects,

Yes,it's quite strange.I think the first man is not Nicolaï,then there is the imperial hymn, the same man and Nicolaï (I think) and the troops answer him...It's only my opinion,I dont' know if it's actually the thuth... :-/

I have heard so many differant "voices " used in documentaries about the Romanovs - that I would enjoy actually connecting the real voices to the faces.  Did anyone actually try to record them or was the technology not quite right?

As Brad says the first part of the recording is not Nicholas - only a small part of it is him.

The Edison people came twice to record the Emperor without success.  There were wax recordings of the Romanov family that the Dowager Empress had.  There were also recordings of Nicholas's speeches, the Grand Duchesses mention having heard them.

The voice in this recording sounds like the same officer throughout.  A rough translation is given below:

A command of some type then:

"Brothers! I drink to the health of our majestic leader Emperor Nicholas Alexandrovich...Hurrah!"

The anthem "God Save the Tsar" is played along with cheers...then

"On with the ceremonial march! Regiment! Go!"

The march "Varshavianka" is played...then

"Brothers! Thank you for the great parade"

Troops answer: "Glad to try, Your Excellency"

More music...then

"Thank you, brothers, for great maneuvers"

Troops answer in the same manner, like in the first time. But their cry does not seem to be "Imperial Majesty" as would be expected if this were the Emperor.

Perhaps I am wrong but the voice always seems to be the same general.
