There are at least three threads on this subject floating around the forums somewhere. A search on "voice" or "Edison" might bring you more information.

In short -- repeating what FA said just a few posts back:
Yes, all of the imperial children were recorded on Edison equipment at some point. The cylinders belonged to Marie Feodorovna and were kept at the Anitchkov palace. The recordings have never been located and are presumed lost in the revolution.

So there were only two copies--the originals and the one copy?  Both lost?  How sad.  Yes, I have seen many copies of newsreel footage of the Imperial Family and wonder how many hours exist and where one might best view the most of them.

Wax cylinders could be mass reproduced by 1901, and Edison home recorders were available in 1905--dictaphones even earlier--so it's sad that more such priceless recordings aren't around.  You'd think the IF would have had a home recorder to play with, or someone in charge of taking home movies of them.

I am not convinced that these things will not resurface at some point. They just found, I believe within the past year or so, Hitlers secret letters or diary. They were up in someone's attic forever. I think a German soldier had taken them. We do not know if someone will go through an attic one day and discover these priceless treasures that we so desperately want to see. It is thanks to all the people on this website and others like it that keep the Imperial family alive with information, questions, or comments.  Maybe this will encourage people to go through their things and see what they may uncover. These recordings are probably sitting in the basement of Minnies cossacks, great grandsons house in Belgium. Hopefully he will look.  :)
