The nephew of queen Sophie, King Wilhelm ll of Wurttemberg and his (second) wife queen Charlotte.

Wilhelm II, King of Württemberg (25 February 1848-2 October 1921) was son of Prince Friedrich of Württemberg 1808-1870 and his wife Catherine of Württemberg 1821-1898, daughter of King William I of Württemberg. In 1891 he succeeded his uncle, Karl I, as King of Württemberg.

He was born in Stuttgart. On 15 February 1877 at Arolsen he married Georgine Henriette Marie of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1857-1882). They had one daughter, Pauline. On 8 April 1886 at Bückeburg, he married Charlotte zu Schaumburg-Lippe (1864-1946).

He became a Generalfeldmarschall. He was deposed from the throne in 1918, along with the other German rulers. He died in Bebenhausen.

The half broher of queen Sophie was Karl of Württemberg. He was the third King of Württemberg, from 25 June 1864 until his death. He was born 6 March 1823 at Stuttgart, as HRH Karl Friedrich Alexander Crown Prince von Württemberg the son of Wilhelm I, King of Württemberg (1781-1864) and his third wife Pauline of Württemberg (1800-1873).He studied in Berlin and Tübingen.

On 13 July 1846 he married Olga Nikolayevna of Russia, daughter of Tsar Nicholas I and Charlotte of Prussia. Charlotte was daughter of Frederick William III of Prussia and Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Under his leadership, Württemberg became, in 1871, part of the German Empire. He died, childless, at Stuttgart on 6 October 1891, and was succeeded as King of Württemberg by his agnatic cousin, his sister's son, Wilhelm II of Württemberg.

Sophie didn`t like her sister in law queen Olga of Wurttemberg. I don`t now the reason for this but I read in her memoirs something like "that terrible woman in Stuttgart".  I believe Sophie had a Russiafoby or something like that because she wasn`t fond of her Russian relatives (after all Olga was also her niece as well). Queen Olga seems to me like a good woman, that is why I can`t explain why it didn`t bother between Sophie and Olga. King Karl was gay and had an American lover. This made queen Olga feel humiliated. I guess the Wurttemberg royals were not a very happy family.

Are there any good portraits of Sophie's mother Katharina whom her sister Queen Anna hated?

Marc, it is hard to find a good coloured portrait of Katharina Paulowna. I think there is a very good one in the Dutch royal collection. You can see it on one of my other postings (Benelux palaces: look at pictures of the interior of Huis ten Bosch. There you see the Winterhalter portrait of queen Sophie, left of this portrait is a portrait of Katharina Paulowna and at her right her father King Wilhelm l of Wurttemberg).  I have seen this portrait coloured though but I can`t remember where. Palace Huis ten Bosch was the personal residence of queen Sophie in her last years. The pictures represent the interior when queen Sophie lived in palaca Huis ten Bosch.

Here is a bust of Katharina Paulowna.

Painting of Katharina Paulowna, Sophie`s mother. Katharina is painted with a painting of her grandmother, empress Katharina the Great, at the wall behind her.
This painting of the mother of Sophie had a place in her boudoir.

Wilhelm l, Sophie`s father, as a young man.

Charlotte Auguste of Bavaria, first wife of Wilhelm l.
She was neglected by Wilhelm l and totally unhappy in Stuttgart. After a few years her family forced a divorce and after that she married emperor Franz ll Joseph Karl of Austria.
