The future William lll  visited in 1835 his Russian family in St. Petersburg. During his stay at the imperial court this portrait was made of him for the imperial collection.

Queen Sophie met duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig Wolfenbuttel, just before she wedded William lll of the Netherlands. She fell in love with him and saw the duke as an opportunity to cancel her marriage with the Dutch heir. Her father wouldn`t hear of it allthough he knew how unhappy she was and fearfull for this marriage. I think Sophie had a clear voyant mind about her future unhappiness and tried to escape from it. Eventually she took her aunt in confidence (Maria Paulowna, grandduchess of Sachsen Weimar Eisenach and sister of her mother). She asked Maia Paulowna to intervene because she wanted to be happy. Maria Paulowna answered "what right do princesses have to be happy"and that was that (from hermemoirs in her book "my live"). So sad.
