These different personalities sure did work to D. João I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster, maybe she had a Latin personality or vice versa... ;D

O.K. It's better Latins not to mix with Germanic people, and vice versa...

Portugal of John I wasn't England of Henry VIII (fortunately some say, unfortunately may other argue... :) )

This topic was about Philippa...I'm sorry I brought up this Bloody Mary problem... ::)

it's ok, i suppose there are exceptions... but knowing mary and philip, i doubt their child would have been one :P

I like going off topic... ;) It's the last time I promise  ::)

I don´t know about Mary, but King Philip has his negative image too much in consequente of historians and other people, that though brilliant, had a clear intention in their works.

He was far far better than Mary's father...but Henry hasn't suffered that intencional blackening...

at least that's my opinon... :)

In the end of all that mess, the dead Mary, Queen of Scots, scores!

You know, if you guys really want to discuss this, the Tudor thread is right round the corner.  ;)

Well...Henry VIII did have a claim through his mother Elisabeth of York (but Elisabeth's brothers were pronounced bastards becouse the legality of their parents marriage was questioned) , but his father's one was even weaker only through his mother, Margaret of Beaufort (a bastard line that was legitimaized). Catherine, on the other hand, was decended from two lines of John of Guant's daughters and their linege was not questioned. That is why people say that Catherine's claim on paper was better than the Tudors she married.

henry 7th cancelled the issue of the yorks legitimity. i'm not sure, but i would have cancelled out the beaufort one too if i were him... but maybe, like prince said on the other thread, he didn't want to bring it up again...

edited to add: back on topic, i remembered i read that portugal and castille what at war when philippa was queen. her sister, catalina, was queen of castille. anyone know about their relations?

No one really bought into Richard III's pronouncement declaring Edward IV's children bastards. Henry VII claimed the throne by conquest, rather than through inheritance or through marriage. But his children, including Henry VIII obviously, were all grandchildren of Edward IV. And since Edward IV's sons had died without issue, the succession rights passed to his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, and thus to her eldest son - Henry VIII!

Grr, ilyala and co have me going off topic now.  ;D

No we have not gone off topic. The claims of the Guant's daughters (Philippa & Catalina's) claim to the English throme was taken seriously in some quarters.  ::)

It certainly was! In England, people who supported the claims of Felipe II's daughter Isabella Clara Eugenia to the throne were called 'Infantists'. Isabella was of course a descendant of both Philippa and Catalina.

Ilyala - tsk, and I thought I was incorruptible!  ;D ;D

Yes, she did, but there was enough intermarriage among their descendants to make it irrelevant.
